This is very sad news indeed. One of the first ever CDs I bought was of him playing the two Mozart A Major piano concertos with the Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra directed by Janis Rolla. The adagio movement of K.488 is one of the loveliest pieces of playing I have ever experienced.

I could hardly believe this headline. The only time I ever saw him live was in Leipzig in 1973. He was 21 and I was 24. (I've dug out the programme: Mozart 456). For that reason I have always thought of him as a young pianist. His Bartok solo recordings on Philips which I snapped up as soon as they appeared as a box are surely a classic set. I shall certainly be dipping into them tonight in memory. RIP

This indeed is very sad news. I have most of his Bartok solo piano music on Philips, wonderfully played, and of course the Third Concerto coupled with the Scherzo for Piano and Orchestra. I shall be playing this disc later, in his memory.

I remember seeing him play at Lancaster a few years ago.

Touching interview on In Tune just now with Ivan Fischer who recounted his first meeting with ZC when they were respectively 13 and 14 at music school together.
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."
