4507 CDs of which a very large number have been acquired since I retired (seven years ago), due to my having more time to listen, the seductive ease of online purchase and the availability of tempting boxed sets. I am now slowing down and mainly filling gaps.

CDs, approx. 1500, based on a quick run around with the tape measure. LPs, there are 7156 listed on my spreadsheet, but the total would be a bit higher because some are box sets and there are still a few recent purchases to add. The LPs represent about thirty years of collecting, but I dont buy many these days, its very hard to find any worthwhile items. I buy a few CSs every month, based on what looks interesting in Gramophone magazine.

That many LPs take up a lot of shelf space, I'm running out of load-bearing walls, though have so far not needed to put up any shelves in the loo.

Simultaneously, far too many and not nearly enough.

If it comes to pass - so to speak - I shall be sure to leave enough room to aim.

Fascinating to see the range of answers from "don't know" to specific numbers.

                That is very precise.

... exactly : main problem is not enuff hours left for listening - all that time wasted in sleeping, eating, reading, walking, watching the tele, being nice to people...

Here the shelving allows for some 100 running metres of space for CDs. All of which is now used up

Collecting since 1967. Approx. 100 78s, 1500 LPs + 3500 CDs. Have become much more choosy in recent years; new releases have to be really exceptional to tempt me. While clearing for a loft conversion, discovered many hundreds of off-air cassettes that need to be binned. Will try to save the occasional R3 CE and Richter recitals, but many tapes have jammed or the foam pressure pad has crumbled to dust. MDs, though, have lasted well.

Same here, but several duplicates (many from amalgamating my partner's collection with mine, and some from bargain box purchases such as the Sony Stravinsky and Boulez (conductor) sets) recently passed on to a second life in the happy home of a fellow boarder (though how he snuck them in past Mrs ts I don't know ).
More room in the new house, but (like others) I really need to listen to what I've got, particularly opera sets, before getting more. And with the Deezer subscription physical purchases might get reduced in number. Well, that's the plan.

The patterns on this thread must be unusual.

On average, how many CDs etc are in peoples' homes?

                            Don't know,probably just under 4,000 ish.
Now I've retired I'm trying to make a point of listening to every single one.
I have never listed or catalogued them and sometimes can't find a recording that I thought was in my collection,on the other hand I come across cds or boxes that I have no recollection of buying

5 CDs per week will take 15 years. Work your rate out from there!

It's for me to know and you to guess .... But it's many, not all played yet .... And I have no regrets .... Well maybe a few grumps about the way the record companies go about things.
