You've missed out the biggest time waster of all: a full time job!

Beefy's estimate of 5 CDs a week is a little on the light side for me but could well be accurate if one takes into account evenings spent in other activities.

I used to be an assiduous counter of music-carrying objects, but I eventually gave up on that. When I left the UK in 1993 I disposed of most of my LP collection which went from somewhere around 2000 to about a tenth of that, most of which I've given away in the meantime so it's 50 at most. Albums including CDs and downloads: about 6000.

          That is very precise.
I have found software is essential for keeping track of what you have and making the most of it all. I have Orange CD and find it excellent and indispensable (and enjoyable to fiddle around with).

Same here - but it has been very comforting to read the replies here and know that I am not the only one whose shelves are groaning.

I eagerly followed this up, only to find it’s not any use for a Mac.

Anyone know of something similar for Macs?
