Good question. All you can really claim to own is permission to rearrange the particles/electrons, etc. on the equipment you already own. A bit of a con really.
More than I can count. I was hoping that starting a high resolution streaming service, ClassicsOnline, might help curb new purchases, but as it exposes me to more unfamiliar music(currently exploring the Lyrita catalog), then I just want to make additional acquisitions. I'm hopeless. Really
Glad to see I'm not the only one who hasn't got a clue. And since they seem to multiply like rabbits the number keeps on increasing almost on a daily basis - the latest being the French Cabaret CD which arrived yesterday. I'm not into downloading though.
My life, each morning when I dress, is four and twenty hours less. (J Richardson)
5,336 albums (digital downloads/CD rips + a number of commercially unreleased performances obtained through the usual channels). Plus 7 albums I have laying around that I haven't bothered to rip yet, mostly because two boxes are at the top of the pile (Busch Quartet and Darmstadt Aural Documents 3) and make it look more intimidating than it is. That's an excuse though, it's mostly just procrastination.

Of course even an LP or CD is merely rearranging the sound waves in your listening room. A bit of a con really.
OT: on a rough count of the shelves, I own about 1500 CDs. I haven't added one for over a year, and probably only 2 or 3 since the Great CD Pruning of summer 2014. They were only added because downloads weren't available. I haven't missed any of the CDs I got rid of; and indeed, I've only played a handful of CDs in the last couple of years. The most use they get is when I add one or other to my computer music library, for listening in the same way as downloads.
Because I'm totally sold on the download route, properly backed-up, and the ability to listen to my music both wirelessly on the big hifi (along with various classical radio stations) and in the car via iPod/iPad is absolutely key to my listening pleasure these days.
.
PS I now have about 30 LPs inherited from my dad, the artwork of which is hugely reminiscent of childhood days. I have nothing to play them on (and have no wish to do so, those I want I have on CD/download) - but I am nonetheless loath to part with them...

Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."
