What a fantastic speech - and what a funny, charming and extremely likeable man. And - yes - very profound. I'm sure musicians and singers must get huge enjoyment out of working with him, if they have the opportunity.
It actually made me want to investigate more of his recordings! I have his Manfred symphony, also 1-6, Shostakovich no. 5, and one or two other pieces, plus a couple of operas. I've often wondered what his Beethoven symphony cycle is like? Or, indeed what other recommendations might be worth looking at...?Comment

I'm not a great admirer of Muti, but that Tchaikovsky cycle is tremendously played and recorded (and contains one of my very favourite Manfreds). As fine are his '70s recordings of the Schumann Symphonies with the (New) Philharmonia are well worth having in your collection, visnick (the later recordings with the VPO lack the fire of these versions):Originally posted by visualnickmos View Post

I picked up a couple of his Beethoven cycle CDs very cheaply expecting great things but was disappointed. Fantastic playing and all very 'correct' but imvho, a bit lacking in engagement. Still, I suppose no conductor can be great at everything.Originally posted by visualnickmos View Post

I have a vague recollection that somewhere in my boxes of LPs there are a few CFPs of Muti conducting Schumann symphonies. They were pretty good as I recall, but I moved on to Sawallisch and Karajan on CDs, and haven't revisted the LPs for years.Comment
