    Gramophone's obit.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

There were 2 pieces of his that I really enjoyed --his VC and Cantus Arctus (I think that was the title). The latter sounded a bit like a homage to Tapiola by Sibelius while not being derivative

I have just listened to his violin concerto, and will probably play Cantus Arcticus later.

He gave us some fabulous music.

Very sad news, one of my favourite contemporary composers, and a composer with a distinct style of his own.

My particular favourites of his works are the 3rd, 5th & 8th Symphonies, as well as Cantus Arcticus.

              RIP

My favourite Rautavaara moment was when Mrs. PG and I were on honeymoon at the Corsewall Lighthouse Hotel near Stranraer some six years ago. We'd done so much driving that we declared Sunday a 'car free' day and just stayed in the suite which was a short distance away from the main hotel building. It was a lovely October day and we had the door from the conservatory to the grounds open. The suite had a nice little hi-fi system which we could play at full volume since there were no neighbours except the cows in a nearby field. I'd had a Rautavaara cd kicking around the car which I'd picked up in a charity shop in Pitlochry a few days before. We put then cd on and found the cows getting nearer to the wall to investigate the sounds! When the music finished, the cows dispersed!

Sadly, I can't remember what the work was since I've acquired more of his music since. However, I can't think of Rautavaara without being reminded of these cows and his music! (And Mrs. PG!)

                        Great story, PG! :)

I have a complete set of his symphonies which I've been (slowly) working my through over the last four years. I also have one of the choral works mentioned above (can't remember which one) picked up in a charity shop.
