Omer Meir Wellber was a new name to me. Last month I saw Wellber conduct the 'Marriage of Figaro' at Semperoper Dresden then a few days later he conducted the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra at Frauenkirche, Dresden in Shostakovich Symphony No. 6; the very same concert shown on the video clip. Since I returned home I have come to realise just how striking his conducting was. A protegee of Barenboim he is a name to look out for. During 'Figaro' he also played the accordian. His showmanship puts me off in one way yet he has a special personality.
During the Munich Opernfestspiele Omer Meir Wellber will again be conducting opera: On 21 and 24 July he will conduct Bavarian State Orchestra for Arrigo Boito’s 'Mefistofele'. This work was the first new production in the current season at the Bavarian State Opera.
