    Contemporary Symphonies to Shostakovich's 10th

Well, I know some of you Forumiters only get the BBC MM for the Cd but at times their articles are quite interesting!(you might say!!)

What caught my attention was the article about the best recording of Shostakovich's mighty 10th Symphony. The reviewer put the one conducted by Andris Nelsons, of which I do have. But there are some rather interesting looking works that surround this symphony. For example Myaskovsky, Of which I know nothing about! kabelevwsy, I have some but be interesting to know about more. Weinberg is getting more notice, now, they are citing is 12th Symphony. Tischenko, anyone.

    Be interesting to read!

The 10th has never done it for me.

Miaskovsky and Kabalevsky have never done anything for me, but I love DSCH/10

        Hi BBM

When you say contemporary with DSCH 10 (1953ish)...
Janis Ivanovs 7th dates from that year and is quite wonderful (its on you tube)
Kabalevsky 4 is from 1956,very like Myaskovsky,Symphonies 1 to 4 are on a nice 2 cd set (CPO)
Tishchenko,I'm more familiar with the Piano Sonatas and String Quartets (you tube)but there is a good Naxos cd of the 7th Symphony, although this was written in 1994,well worth hearing even though it sounds a little like 2nd hand DSCH

All the above not a patch on DSCH 10 of course

Myaskovsky was dead before DSCH 10 was first performed as you know, the 27 Symphonies are available in a boxed set (Svetlanov)one of my most treasured sets, you really should try to hear the masterpiece that is the 6th,a better performance than Svetlanov is Neeme Jarvi on DG (this also includes the optional chorus in the finale)
Weinberg 12 dates from 1976 and was written in memory of DSCH who had died the year before.
This is a massive work, almost like a concerto for orchestra and as fine a work as Shostakovich's 10th (but only IMVHO !!!!!)it also contains references to the DSCH motif
