    Elsie Morison RIP

There is an obituary in today's Times for Elsie Morison, who died on 5 April, aged 91.

Remembered here as the soprano in John Pritchard's recording of Tippett's A child of our time.

... and as the soprano soloist in her husband's recording of the Mahler Fourth (not to mention the Sargent G&S recordings). Lovely voice.

That's the thing I remember. Absolutely radiant.

I must confess that I hadn't realised she was still with us. Ferney's reference to the Sargent G and S recordings reminds me of how I first encountered her voice; she seems to have retired very young (not quite 40). RIP.

She also sang the soprano part in Sargent's recording of the Messiah and this, together with the Kubelik Mahler 4, represent her only contribution on my shelves.

Hers was indeed a lovely voice, not just in the G&S recordings mentioned by ferney but also in Beecham's recording of Handel's Solomon, my first encounter with that work and still a recording I greatly value.

                  RIP.
