    Alan Loveday RIP

An obituary in the Timesctoday died last week at age of 88.

John Williams mentioned him only on Saturday, in his interview with Tom Service, as a dear friend.

Saw him once at the Colston Hall, Bristol - the Mendelssohn Concerto. Probably around 1958.

Very sad to read about this. I loved his Beethoven sonatas, which were on LP with Leonard Cassini. Not sure if they ever made it to CD.
I had 5, 7, 8 and 9, which were I think on the Fidelio label. The Kreutzer and Spring sonatas were excellent. The other sonatas are not so well known, I think - but were still very good.

There's a list here, but the Kreutzer and Spring sonatas aren't on it - https://www.discogs.com/artist/551071-Alan-Loveday
I wonder how many of his recordings are still available, either on CD or via streaming and/or downloads. iTunes does show several, including some Vivaldi, Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante, and a John Ireland sonata.

I don't know much else about Leonard Cassini - a list of his recordings is here - https://www.discogs.com/artist/1732100-Leonard-Cassini

Yes, I read about his death on Lebrecht's site. Very sad indeed.

My favourite recording of his is his portrayal of Scheherazade under Kempe with the RPO. IMHO, some of the most beautiful violin playing ever committed to disc.

I have his Beethoven Spring and Kreutzer sonatas on a very old lp. I'm 99% sure they've never been reissued on cd, mores the pity. Definitely time for a re-appraisal.

RIP Mr. Loveday. Thank you for the music.

A good innings from a very fine violinist. Didn't he record Elgar's violin concerto? RIP

Sorry, bbm, if only. He did record Elgar's violin sonata in 1963 but I can find no record of the concerto in his discography. Of course, he may well have broadcast it so there MAY be a tape somewhere in the BBC's archive.

One day, probably outside our lifetime, it may be possible to access the BBC's recorded library. The treasures it must contain...
