    BBC Music Magazine

Has W H Smiths dropped the BBC Music Magazine, or is it just the main branch at Glasgow Central Sation? I used to browse through it when I had half an hour to wait for a train, but they haven't had it in stock for the past couple of months. They still have the Gramaphone, so they haven't dropped clasical music publications totally.

Ah - maybe they were fed up with me browsing & not buying (unless the cover CD caught my interest)

I switched to the BBC Music Magazine from Gramophone.

I'm unsure of whether to continue, as it seems to be written by journalists who don't check their facts, or by others who have been weaned in the R3 talking down mode.

A brief glance at the September 2018 issue gives us a BaL in every Record Review, including the first two Saturdays when the Proms are still in full flow.

Venus is described as an icy hostile planet.

The Building a Library feature compares recordings of Tchaikovsky's "Manfred". I thought I was reading a child's pop-up book when I read the following:

"Turn the page to discover the best recording of Tchaikovsky's Manfred Symphony."

I gave up on it when Tesco removed it from their Clubcard promotions list. One can just about guarentee that the cocer CD (the only worthwhile aspect of the publication) will turn up in charity shops for £1 or so, at some point.

. Probably dropped it because they never sold any then!

Must admit I quite like it (enough to get it on subscription).

I quite like it too; enough to continue paying my subscription by direct debit when I found I could no longer use my Tesco Clubcard points.
I have been a subscriber since the very first issue, and have all the cover CDs; in several cases they are the only versions I have of some 'mainstream' (mainly Romantic period) repertoire that would not ordinarily appeal.
I could do without so many featuring the dreaded BBC Singers though!

Goes with the territory, I guess. Have they improved since the new conductor/music director started?

There have been times recently when they sound better, but not always.
Could this be stemming from having to sing absolutely everything?
Leading to everything sounding a bit samey?
Speaking from a position of complete ignorance here.

                        Unbelievable!

Almost as bad as having Katie Derham on the cover of the July Proms edition. In what Prom is she performing. How the BBC seem obsessed with the cult of the personality. Placing a presenter on the cover before say highlighting Bernstein and Debussy in the year of their respective centenary anniversaries, show me where the BBC's priorities lie.

Bryn, I also gave up for similar reasons a few years ago, and have indeed picked up a few of the discs for 50p or £1, occasionally inadvertently duplicating through memory lapse, but at least the charity benefited. Over the years there have been some gems on the MM label.

The really shocking thing in that article was the news that the Symphonie fantastique now has only four movements. I've asked them to specify which one we should leave out when we play old CD versions
I keep hitting the Escape key, but I'm still here!
