Oh no. This is terrible, sad news. I thought he'd gotten 'round that difficult episode of his illness.

        How very sad.

I met him once, it must have been 1972 when he came to the Arnolfini Gallery in Bristol and gave a piano recital - the late Brahms Intermezzi, Schoenberg Op 11 and a piece of his own based on Schubert, iirc. I spoke to him briefly afterwards - he was very friendly and approachable, and the strongest impression was of those piercing blue eyes.

        RIP Sir Peter

Yes, a very friendly approachable man. I fawned over him a couple of times following gigs (something I've not shaken off since first going to gigs in the 70s!).

              I'm really feeling sad.

              RIP Max

So did I; indeed, I had read with no small amount of relief that this was the case.

Very sad and quite shocked at this news.

                RIP, Max.

This was a shock. BBC1 News just about mentioned it at the end of the programme. Cf David Bowie coverage.

My thought too. Yet another sad loss.

But a longish item on R4 WATO.

41 mins in until the end of the programme:

Rigorous analysis of news and current affairs, presented by Mark Mardell.

An inspiration , not least through his final work and illness.

When I was a student at Bangor University in 1970, there was much speculation of who would succeed Reginald Smith Brindle as professor of music. Many students were rooting for PMD. In the end, William Mathias took over as professor - another who was born in 1934.
