I met him once, it must have been 1972 when he came to the Arnolfini Gallery in Bristol and gave a piano recital - the late Brahms Intermezzi, Schoenberg Op 11 and a piece of his own based on Schubert, iirc. I spoke to him briefly afterwards - he was very friendly and approachable, and the strongest impression was of those piercing blue eyes.

Yes, a very friendly approachable man. I fawned over him a couple of times following gigs (something I've not shaken off since first going to gigs in the 70s!).
When I was a student at Bangor University in 1970, there was much speculation of who would succeed Reginald Smith Brindle as professor of music. Many students were rooting for PMD. In the end, William Mathias took over as professor - another who was born in 1934.
