The one in the OP seems to be only partly mechanical. The 'bass and drums' rhythm section was surely electronic? Fun, though.

All mechanical with contact mics on the "drums" and the (bass is an electric bass).
So not really 'electronic' IMV

I find it a great shame that all that effort and ingenuity went into building something to produce such generic and unoriginal music. What happened to the idea of creating new instruments as a way to create new musical possibilities?

I think lots of folks are though (as i'm sure you know more than I do) .
I think this one caught the tide of the internet as it's "music as we know it" rather than "Ice Cream Van from Mars" music (as Malcolm Milner calls his gamelan piece)

Well, some are, but there's also a lot of new weird and wonderful ways of making ordinary music too. You're right of course that this kind of thing easily captures the collective unimagination of the internet...
