I think that it's probably that self-same "we" to which/whom Sydney Grew so often has recourse and, as far as I understand the intended meaning of such use of it (which I'm not convinced is all that far), it embraces a kind of arrogant assumption in seeking to connote "me and, because I'm right in what I say, everyone else thinks as I do".

I presumed it was a typo for "wee" - after all, no well-educated person would say "for we gentlemen" (or "for we ladies"). ("For unto we a Son is born"?)
