Chronochromie is a quite spectacular depiction I always think .

...and one of his finest works on all levels, I think, though one might wonder about that given tht it's sadly less often performed than quite a few of his others.

Breathtaking - yes - and by then OM really knew what he was doing with birdsong, after the dazzling use of them in Oiseaux exotiques and Catalogue d'oiseaux

I found this quote in French wiki helpful (I have heard Catalogue, tho I approached it as a curious birder, familiar with all the species depicted ): -

Messiaen n'a pas voulu pour ces pièces se limiter à l'évocation de l'oiseau dont chacune d'elle porte le titre. Il précise : « Chaque pièce est écrite en l'honneur d'une province française. Elle porte en titre le nom de l'oiseau-type de la région choisie. Il n'est pas seul : ses voisins d'habitat l'entourent et chantent aussi (...)- son paysage, les heures du jour et de la nuit qui changent ce paysage, sont également présents, avec leurs couleurs, leur températures, la magie de leurs parfums.
