I heard both of her appearances at Symphony Hall and she was very good indeed. The CBSO played wonderfully and were clearly very happy with her.

Hope she can attract some exciting soloists for next season, but the CBSO is v short of money after a huge cut in support from Birmingham CC.

I hadn't heard of her until this morning when the announcement was made, but it feels like a very exciting move. The CBSO has a great track record in plucking relative unknowns and sending them off as internationally-renowned conductors.

It's rather worrying though. The BBC hasn't yet decided how to pronounce José Mourinho.

MGT (if I may be so bold) was interviewed a little earlier on In Tune and sounds an absolute star.

The NYT article today (!) on MG-T's appointment takes care (emphasis mine) of that (hey, we're dumb Americans who "cain't speak foreign"):

"Ms. Grazinyte-Tyla (her name is pronounced MEER-gah grah-zhee-NEE-teh tee-LA)"

Though obviously Lithuanian diacriticals might just be beyond the NYT's webpage bandwidth ;) . Seriously, though, this sounds like a great move on the CBSO's part. MG-T also got a great review for her recent San Diego Symphony debut, so wise of the CBSO to get a move on to sign her up. I suspect that the CBSO will be using the phrase "Mirga Mania" a lot in subsequent marketing.
