    ...or rather NO MUSIC. BBC4????

When did we last get any decent music on BBC4 ? I had hoped that Friday nights might have been a regular slot for a recorded concert. We did get a few Prom excerpts a while ago. Now the Radio Times yields up nothing in the way of televised 'classical' music. A disgrace.

It does seem to go in cycles. Some weeks there are interesting programmes and other weeks nothing. Quite odd.

Documentaries pop up from time to time, but if you want concerts or recitals outside the Proms the pickings are very poor. Remember - BBC Four is television's home of classical music which celebrated BBC Music Day with a non-stop stream of programmes on pop music. Since there is no longer either a 'Head of Classical Music' nor a 'Chair of the Classical Music Board' (or even a Classical Music Board to be Chair of), all responsibility for the cross-BBC music broadcasting seems now to devolve upon the 'Director of Music' (aka Controller of Radio 2). So, if you want a reason why abolishing the label 'classical music' in favour of just 'music' is a bad thing - think on.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

"They" fear an audience cannot concentrate long enough to last a span of music. In the Boulez prog. tonight we were only allowed snippets of The Rite, La Mer, L'Apres Midi, Gurre-Lieder, Janacek Sinfonietta and Le Marteau Sans Maitre. Exasperating. Why not one piece per week for the next six weeks?

Yes I agree, though to be fair, this was a 1-hour documentary on Boulez; it should of course have been twice that length for a figure of comparison with Bowie in importance, but I was surprised we weren't given a 30-second clip from "The Ring"!

I think it's appalling that the Boulez documentary was sandwiched between Top of the Pops at 7.30, and then continuous pop music from 9pm well into the early hours of Saturday morning. Why can they not use BBC3 for this purpose?? BBC4 is supposed to reflect the peak of serious, quality TV broadcasting (isn't it?). What a waste of a channel!

At least we did get an hour - although as others have pointed out, there were significant omissions, and the programme could easily have been doubled in length.

I can't find mention of this by searching for a thread. So I'll post this here.

BBC2 today's schedule on the website for 03:00 - early hours of Sunday 20 March - one hour programme - Handel's Messiah at the Foundling Hospital (Tom Service/Amanda Vickery). I'm not sure if this is likely to be good viewing, but I missed the programme previously so I'll be happy to give my recording a try....

It was a very good documentary - both TS and AV are variable in quality, but when they succeed (as they do here) they're very worth paying attention to. I think you'll enjoy it, CS.

The melancholy 'answer' is that the under 35s aren't interested in Top of the Pops programmes made before they were born. And BBC Three is entirely for the under 35s. So there's nowhere else on television to put it and put it and put it and put it and put it and put it and put it and put it and put it and put it and put it &c except the BBC's premier arts service

And it spreads to BBC2 as well - this, tonight: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b041z245
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                        Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Now that we've had 3 consecutive weeks with serious music programmes on BBC4, I see that next (Good)Friday, there is nothing - mostly "Girls in Bands"! I guess that's it then, until the Proms start. At least there seems to be a fair smattering of Bach on Radio 3 for Easter week, both Passions, and a concert of 3 Cantatas on Thursday - that should be a feast.

For 50 years, BBC Two has been at the heart of popular music in the UK. So what is BBC Four now?

I see two Duke Ellington tunes listed in that link so not all is lost! Or maybe they couldn't find anything called Gravy Train..
