Glad you unearthed the answer from among the various ensuing debates, Warwick
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

I well remember a concert at York University in 1971-2 in which Roger Woodward gave us the Hammerklavier along with Scriabin and Takemitsu with different colour lighting for each composer.

Back in 2006, Stephen Plaistow's BaL choices were:

                        First Choice:
                        Francois-Frederic Guy
                        (recorded 2006; c/w Sonata No.8 in C minor, Op.13 'Pathetique'; Sonata No.19 in G minor, Op.49 No.1)
                        NAIVE V5023 (CD)

                        Live Performance Choice:
                        Alfred Brendel
                        (recorded 1995; c/w Sonata No.26 in E flat, Op.81a 'Les Adieux')
                        PHILIPS 4460932 (CD, mid-price - import only)
or as part of the Complete Piano Sonatas
                        PHILIPS 4469092 (10-CD, mid-price)

                        Budget Choice:
                        Maurizio Pollini
                        (recorded 1977; c/w Sonata No.28 in A, Op.101; Sonata No.30 in E, Op.109; Sonata No.31 in A flat, Op.110; Sonata No.32 in C minor, Op.111)
                        DEUTSCHE GRAMMOPHON 4497402
                        (2-CD, budget)

                        Historic Choice:
                        Solomon
                        (recorded 1952; c/w Sonata No.26 in E flat, Op.81a 'Les Adieux'; Sonata No.27 in E minor, Op.90)
                        TESTAMENT SBT1191 (CD, mid-price)

QOBUZ have the Guy commplete Beethoven piano sonatas in lossless 44.1/16 for €17.99, though this is a later, live, survey than the recording which was the BaL top choice.

Edith Vogel's recording on a years-old BBC MM disc is very well worth seeking out.
I keep hitting the Escape key, but I'm still here!

My original copy suffered 'bronzing' and would not play well. Fortunately, I found a copy in a charity shop for £1.00, and that played perfectly. Just in case, I have backed it up.

I do love the slow movement,it sounds to me like a sort of pain or despair in musical form.
But there is something else in it that I'm not quite grasping, which I can't put into words.
