Once all the crackers, hooters and funny hats are put away the following is the perfect antidote to Loud Noise, whilst providing some of the most serenely appropriate Christmas music, imvvho, (yes, even humbler than Anton's ) ...

Olivier Messiaen (1908--1992), Vingt regards sur l'Enfant-Jésus (1944), for pianoYvonne Loriod, piano00:00:00 I. Regard du Père00:05:28 II. Regard de l'éto...

I always thought Anton was being honest rather than humble.
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
            Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

for both Misa Criolla and Nuestra Natividad. "La Peregrinacion" is approx. 18: 38 mins in.

"Black Nativity" , this show was at the Piccadilly Theatre for a while. on tour. Gospel with great organ and piano backing! (Smaller forces than Padraig's gospel group!)

Clive Heath transcribes 78 records onto CD and gets rid of the crackle.

and finally: Sammy Davis Jr.and a children's choir who will melt your heart if you're a soppy date like me. Merry Christmas Everybody!

Yes, by rights the excellent Nuestra Natividad is more fitting than Misa Criolla but there is no point in being too prescriptive in these matters.

It is indeed ... something which gloriously vindicates the philosopher's wise words below, though I don't know if the Professor is a Messiaen fan. If not, he certainly should be, the ignorant fellow.

However, if Olivier is too shockingly 'moderne' and/or idolatrously 'Catholique' for some of our Xmas dinner guests, I'd be quite happy to settle for anything at all by that reliable Old Lutheran, J. S. Bach ... yes, absolutely anything at all. Mrs T's battered and scratched Neil Diamond records have had a very good run in previous years and I feel certain she'll readily sympathise with the solitary cry in the wilderness for some change.

I'm sure Judge Butler-Sloss would rule that Christmas should be a time for a generous display of Tolerance & Inclusivity, after all ...

...then I'd suggest that you change your dinner guest list.

The setting of O Magnum Mysterium, I am never too sure whether this should be a Christmas item?

The text absolutely is - do you mean there's something un-Christmaslike about Messaien's setting?

Not Messiaen's. I was under the impression of an Easter setting, more suitable but hey ho, I do have these rather whimsical ideas sometimes about certain settings. Maybe this is one of them!

I have a Spotify Playlist of Christmas Music and I saw that it lasts for 19 hrs or more! I thought, hmmmmm!! I have had duplicates, etc, so saved, imo, the better versions.

Yes, the text could hardly be more 'Christmassy'.

Bbm has certainly baffled us there ...

Not that I bother overmuch with texts and settings. The music is the thing alongside one's own very personal thoughts.
