This could at a pinch (bah! humbug!) be an Upcheering work, Or What I'm listening to now, or Christmas Music: Torelli's concerti grossi 1-6 (I Musici). Coming up: Pastorale per il Santissimo Natale. What a sprightly old tunesmith he wasIt isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

I was searching for a particular version of The Oxen which I heard and taped a few years ago on a folk programme on the radio. I wanted to post it for a Christmas thread but it contained a fatal flaw: in the verse 'so fair a fancy few would weave' the singer had 'in those years'. I have never found any version of that song since.
However, new to me, I liked this recording of Thomas Hardy's The Oxen.

I am afraid I like traditional Christmas carols most though Bach's oratorio and the Messiah tend to get an airing around Christmas. For a long while a Decca CD from King's with Cleobury was my favourite but they have tended to be edged out recently by that old Chandos record from York MInster with Francis Jackson that our former member ferney recommended- for which every Christmas I am grateful.
