This is just gorgeous...I think probably the best of all the Stile Antico discs, and that is saying something.

Yes, that disc has been a regular favourite ever since its appearance.

This year (thanks to Ian Skelly putting in eloquent words on Wednesday evening for Jean Mouton), I have discovered on Qobuz this gem of a recording:

La Maîtrise de Toulouse Conservatoire de Toulouse directed by Mark Opstad

The recording and performance by the Maîtrise de Toulouse are excellent by any choral standards.

So far, these are the sounds of Christmas 2020 here

          Complete programme:

          Motets de Noël anciens
Noe, noe, psallite noe - Jean Mouton
Noe pastores cantate canticum novum - Bouzignac
          Ave Maria - Bouzignac
Dum silentium tenerent omni - Bouzignac
          Stella refulget - Bouzignac
Magi videntes stellam - Etienne Moulinié
Hodie Christus natus est - Louis-Nicolas Clérambault
Salve puerule - Marc Antoine Charpentier

          Motets de Noël modernes
          Salve Regina - Francis Poulenc
Quatre Motets pour le temps de Noël - Poulenc
          - O magnum mysterium
          - Quem vidistis, pastores? dicite
          - Videntes stellam
          - Hodie Christus natus est
Chant de la Nativité - Jean Roger-Ducasse
Hodie Christus natus est - Marc Bleuse

          Noëls
Guillaume, Antoine et Pierre - Provençal, arr. Jean Bouvard
Birjina gaztettobat zegoen (basque) - Basque, arr. Opstad
El noi de la Mare (catalan) - Roussillonnais, arr. Opstad
Anan auzi las aubados (occitan) - Toulousain, arr. Opstad
Noël nouvelet - Français, arr. Opstad
Dormi, fili, dormi! - Alsacien, arr. Opstad
Quelle est cette odeur agréable? - Français, arr. Opstad

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
          Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Another old favourite...the Charpentier Christmas recordings of Christie always come out in this household every year.

This is a very pleasing selection of old carols played on a variety of lutes by the wonderful Rolf Lislevand - an intimate and refreshingly different Christmas disc.

That might not be one which floats my boat, but was it ever available on CDs? Now it only seems to be available as a download, which is a shame.
