By the way, I would never accuse Marc-André Hamelin of being tyrannical, but he has written a player-piano piece which is entitled Pop Music for the sole and simple reason that it's based on Pop goes the weasel, although I will spare you all any weasel words about it...

And having listened to it I would say that (IMV) it really doesn't sound good at all, just muddled and messed about with.

Wow, thanks for having a listen Gongers, but be aware, is the muddled mess (and the details) to which you refer, solely to do with the volume levels? Each audio item should sound as if it is coming from near enough the same distance (bearing in mind the loud sections are compressed).

But the fact of the matter is that they are. OK, so not completely on Radio 3, I'll give 'em that, but still way too much for my ears. I still jump out of my skin if I miss getting to the volume control before the ending of a big orchestral piece and the presenter comes on at virtually the same volume. Gee whizzo!

Realising how much one DOESN'T know or understand is rather important I would say (I would suggest finding someone who really understands these things and talking with them)

If you bothered to educate yourself about how the perception of volume in music relates to many other factors (as I mentioned in #418) you would maybe have a little understanding of how these things work.
The perception of "distance" and spatialisation is NOT solely related to volume but lots of other things as well but you can't be arsed to consider them. (#419)

If you COMPRESS the audio you are likely to reduce the perception of spatialisation within the sound image (unless you really know how to do multi-band compression as well as geniuses like Dallas Simpson)
