"So-called ‘Atonal’ Music Has Just Been In A Minor All Along" - Discuss....

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Oh dear! I suspect he's a part-time taxonomist, because the 'row' seems to mirror the arguments about just what species any new fossil belongs to. (Hint: classification is a human construct - very useful most of the time, but ultimately artificial.)

      It's quite clearly A Phrygian!

(But then I would think that - typical Capricorn.)

Sagittarian, me (if I believed in anything like that, of course).

The write-up sounds like a spoof to me

              Surely not!

... I think I preferred the article in the same publication recommending the five catchiest Stockhausen Klavierstücke for working-out to ; and the article proving that Telemann was the greatest composer of all time...

Like most Sagittarians, I don't believe in astrology.

I could just about persuade myself of some A minor vestiges, but only by playing the melody fairly loud and the rest very soft (and by being primed in advance to expect A minor)! How often the ear "looks" for tonality when it isn't really there (or just implied) is an interesting point, possibly. Or perhaps "tonal centres".

Not that we capricorns need reminding, I suppose.

Probably the, er, key-note clue in that article is where the author refers to the Rite of Spring and Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra as part of his argument.

And what's all this about raised and lowered intervals in the key of A minor? Unless this is a misquote, the one characteristic of diatonic scales is their consistency in intervallic distribution. I can't see anything else in it that makes any sense.

Any logicians about? Is the publisher's statement true or false?

A minor diversion then, I guess.

I have had my moments for as well as against - but then am close to its cusp with Capricorn.

The thread suggests 95% of forum members are Sagittarians or Capricorns. On topic, no idea!
