With the living, three composers come to mind, Rautavaara, Sallinen & Christopher Rouse. Of the recently deceased Carter & Dutilleux with Henze possibly.

Dont know about greatest, but there are few whose music I enjoy more than Rousey.
I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

I wouldn't quibble with any of those. Another couple I regard highly are Kalevi Aho and Kaija Saariaho.

Anthony Payne, because he's as good as Elgar.

Andre Previn - the most versatile musician alive.

These are all good picks, Suffolkcoastal.

As for "recently departed", Carter and Stockhausen, of course - and Ligeti and Aldo Clementii; but also (for different reasons) Fausto Romitelli (aged 41) and Steve Martland (aged 53)

... and, of course, Malcolm Arnold, John McCabe and Ronald Stevenson.

One of our regular and valued contributors, often afflicted by rotten health (and I hope that she is basking on a Caribbean beach somewhere at the moment, her every whim attended to) might feel that David Matthews deserves a mention. If so, I am happy to supply a "proxy" vote.

...especially where hair'style' is concerned, remembering the 1970s André Pevin's Music Night series!
