Lieder and Art Song for Beginners/Intermediates

Beef Oven! thought it would be a great idea if some of the board experts would be kind enough to guide those of us who are less steeped this music towards the good stuff. The great music, top singers, unmissable performances, all time Youtube greats, that sort of thing.

Currently very high on my playlist is a Peter Schreier/Walter Olbertz performance of Die Schone Mullerin. Magic stuff.

Great thread

Art songs/lieder is a bit of a blind spot/neglected area for me, but over the last few weeks I've been listening to an awful lot of Webern's songs and I've been blown away!

Last year I bought Schubert's Winterreise performed with soprano and hurry gurdy and I found it very involving.

I've ordered some Ned Rorem songs too. They should be waiting for me when I'm home from holiday.

I'm looking forward to exploring this area as a novice.

A good idea for a thread although I doubt I will have much to contribute. One thing I have noticed is that R3 seems VERY keen on Die Winterreise. It isn't quite the work for me but my natural inclination - or in other words limited knowledge - would be to go for one of, apparently, three recordings by Fischer-Dieskau and Moore. Of course, I may post more whenever I remind myself that something I listen to fits into this category. There have probably been some relevant posts already but I would have been thinking outside any box:

I listen to a lot of English songs,presumably these don't count.
There was a time when I had loads of records of Schubert,Brahms,Schumann and Hugo Wolf lieder,but I never really enjoyed listening to them,so I passed them on.
Can't say I miss them.

There is so much that is lovely awaiting discovery.
Could I recommend Schumann's Liederkreis op 39 settings of Eichendorff poems especially in the vivid and beautiful Bryn Terfel/Malcolm Martineau recording.
On a more southerly tack, La Maja Dolorosa by Granados sung by Teresa Berganza especially De aquel majo amante, once heard in an Edinburgh Festival recital and never since forgotten.

I'm not sure what he difference is between song,art song and lied.
Are lieder German and songs or art songs can be anything ?
