Saddened to read of the death of conductor Elgar Howarth - also known as W Hogarth Lear when writing in a lighter vein for brass.
He conducted the first prom I attended - 1st Aug 1984, Berio Sinfonia and Birtwistle Three Movements with Fanfares and Nomos. (With Bartok Sonata for two pianos and percussion in the central third of the concert). I also recall seeing an Opera North Katya Kabanova in 1988 and a few years later a BBC Phil concert in the old Studio 7 on Oxford Road with RVW 8 and a new trumpet concerto by Michael Blake Watkins, with Haken Hardenberger as soloist.
