    JG Windows RIP

Alas, Windows in Newcastle is to close later on his month, having been around since the early 20th century as the place to buy decent classical music in the north east. I was at Durham Uni in the 80s, but as the town had little to offer in the way of real proper CD stores rather than the usual chains, it was always a pleasure to take the short train journey to Newcs and spend a fortune on acres of LPs I didn't really have the money to afford there, especially when they had frequent sales! David Bedford's 'the Song of the White Horse' anybody? And my first CD purchese was Copland's 3rd Symphony conducted by Lenny Bernstein on DG.

It will be sadly missed for classical music lovers the world over

    Yes, a great shame.
Will they have to rename the Arcade?

Though I can hardly claim to have sustained it; I knew of it, but think I only bought one CD there, on a visit on 4/8/2009, long before I moved to York: this harp recital (bought for the Hindemith; the receipt, for £5, is tucked in with the liner notes).

The harp from the classical to the modern age. This programme covers over two centuries of music originally written for the harp: from the sonatas of C.P.E. Bach and Dussek (the classical style), to more recent works in which the instrument is freed from the constricting traditions of a stereotype repertory. This title was released for the first time in 1987.

Yes a lovely shop in a lovely arcade - probably a good half of my feeble CD collection was purchased in their sales. The children loved spending their Christmas and birthday money there …… so sad ……

Sorry to hear about Windows. Memories for me also of being a student at Durham. When I was there late 60s there was a decent record shop called House of Andrews in the centre of Durham (I remember getting an LP with Lisa Della Casa, Four Last Songs in Ace of Clubs) so it was not always essential to go Newcastle, which we mainly visited for football, theatre etc. It must have closed by the time you got there, maybe killed off by the "usual chains".
I also remember the regular Windows mail order ads in Gramophone.

Perhaps it should remain - as a testament to previous glories.
