..and amazingly, Lisiecki is still only 20.

Slightly fuzzy video of the performance available in the usual place. That's how to do it !

Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments

It's one of the concerts I've kept on my Sky+ box and intend to transfer to DVD - one day! (Along with the "Welsh" Bernstein Mass from the same year, or possibly the one before,)

Yes me too, I have it on the Hard Drive under the telly, with a similar intention. The Schumann, that is (not the Bernstein - though I was in the hall for that! )

According to the not necessarily reliable Lebrecht, the runner up was an ex pupil of Fanny Waterman. I see that Paul Lewis is taking over as "artistic director" of the competition together with Adam Gatehouse who founded the Radio 3 New Generation Artists scheme.

I think I was a little hasty when I suggested that the television coverage had improved this year. The conclusion of the third programme was dreadful. Instead of the usual reverse announcement of the winners (usually with Dame Fanny's unique style), we were shown Dame Janet Baker announcing only the winner; no build-up, no indication of the placing of the other finalists.

I had a real feeling that the BBC was showing it because it felt it had to; no commitment, no enthusiasm. Very sad.

I haven't watched much of the TV coverage yet but it sounds as if the very entertaining speech from Sir Mark Elder before the main prize giving got under way has not been broadcast. The whole conclusion was a very low key affair with very little said by Dame Fanny. The prizes, in reverse order, were all announced by Dame Janet.

May be the earlier decision to limit each programme to 90 minutes meant not much of the prize giving could be shown given the length of the final two concertos.

The last section of the broadcast consisted of: contestant leaving stage, contestant being greeted by Elder, a few opinions from the two past winners and then "Here's Dame Janet announcing the winner" - which is literally all we got. No sense of occasion at all. A few extra minutes for Elder's speech and then the announcement of all the winners would have taken a few more minutes. Would that be too much to ask at the conclusion of a major three-yearly event? Perhaps the organisers should see whether Sky or Channel 4 could do a better job in 2018.
