I am amazed but I recall the final being live on BBC2 and that cannot have been the case if it clashed with LNOTP . Perhaps it used to end a week later .

Yes - LNOP 2012 Saturday 8th September, Leeds final Sunday 16 September 2012. Bad clash this year.
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Well - near "clash", perhaps? LNotP Saturday, Leeds Final Sunday.

No - that's the point: this year, the Leeds Finals were Friday/Saturday http://www.leedspiano.com/content/fi...mmes-announced

Only non-live on the radio on Sunday....

Ach! I'd not "sussed" (I'd thought it was a busy day for the Orchestra & Sir Mark!) Previous comment withdrawn - daft timing from Leeds.

              Just a gentle reminder:

              Today - 19:30 - 21:00 on BBC FOUR

I've just watched last week's television showing of the Leeds finals. Whilst not commenting on the playing until I've heard all six finalists, I found the coverage really refreshing. Has there been a swing back to more traditional coverage? We saw the complete concertos and a minimum of comment and background on the players. In recent years I'm sure we were swamped with footage of the players at home, practising, spending time with their families and other such trivia. Have our opinions been listened to? Is this the start of more serious coverage of such events?

Good point Vodka. Have to say the two performances were both very disappointing.

I didn't mind the Schumann at all, as long as you didn't have to look at the Lang²esque swaying and emoting by the chap playing the piano. What didn't you like about the performance, Alison?

I have had a number of longish car trips lately, and so took the opportunity of being able to put the radio broadcasts of the final on the car iPod, and have listened to all 6 performances.

If you didn't like the first two, Alison, you wait till the third performance (presumably it'll be first on the next TV programme on Friday) - the first of two Rachmaninov 3rd PC performances in the finals. The pianist, one Yun Wei, had several shockers, notably in the last movement - Elder really earned his fee keeping the whole show on the road at that point. Peter Donohoe in his comments after said the pianist had some memory issues 'in the first and second movements' - I didn't notice the latter, but blimey that last movement...! Made me think of Scotty in Star Trek: "I can't hold her much longer Captain!!"... Tempo relations all over the place, too. She was way out of her depth, I thought.

CORRECTION: the TV bods of course played around with the order, so I see that this accident-prone performance was actually the second one in the initial TV programme. So Alison I completely concur with your disappointment in that respect!!

Wasn't terrifically impressed with the winner in the Brahms 2; the one that caught my ear was the American Drew Petersen in Rachmaninov 1, who will presumably be first up in Friday's programme; he was also the stand-out for me in the semifinals.

Great, we agree after all then!

The Schumann prosaically one dimensional I thought, no lift to the phrasing. Perhaps I still hear that remarkable Lisiecki Proms performance from two seasons ago; not many could live with that playing!

It would be interesting to know how many of the finalists were taught by one of the members of the jury.

Yes Alison, that was in a different class.

But the Schumann the other night wasn't as big a disaster as the Chinese player's Rach 3. The Russian finalist's version of the latter was somewhat better.

A review of Sunwook Kim's performance with the Halle last Thursday suggested that the Halle and Elder might have felt it was a very different experience from the two pianists they accompanied in Leeds.

Very memorable. I'm looking forward to hearing him at The Wigmore Hall later in the Autumn.

You'll have a ball. I heard him do the other set of Etudes there a couple of years ago, magical. Can't do the October date this year, sadly.

Just got to hear this Sunwook Kim bloke live now....
