I am amazed but I recall the final being live on BBC2 and that cannot have been the case if it clashed with LNOTP . Perhaps it used to end a week later .

I've just watched last week's television showing of the Leeds finals. Whilst not commenting on the playing until I've heard all six finalists, I found the coverage really refreshing. Has there been a swing back to more traditional coverage? We saw the complete concertos and a minimum of comment and background on the players. In recent years I'm sure we were swamped with footage of the players at home, practising, spending time with their families and other such trivia. Have our opinions been listened to? Is this the start of more serious coverage of such events?

I have had a number of longish car trips lately, and so took the opportunity of being able to put the radio broadcasts of the final on the car iPod, and have listened to all 6 performances.
If you didn't like the first two, Alison, you wait till the third performance (presumably it'll be first on the next TV programme on Friday) - the first of two Rachmaninov 3rd PC performances in the finals. The pianist, one Yun Wei, had several shockers, notably in the last movement - Elder really earned his fee keeping the whole show on the road at that point. Peter Donohoe in his comments after said the pianist had some memory issues 'in the first and second movements' - I didn't notice the latter, but blimey that last movement...! Made me think of Scotty in Star Trek: "I can't hold her much longer Captain!!"... Tempo relations all over the place, too. She was way out of her depth, I thought.
CORRECTION: the TV bods of course played around with the order, so I see that this accident-prone performance was actually the second one in the initial TV programme. So Alison I completely concur with your disappointment in that respect!!
Wasn't terrifically impressed with the winner in the Brahms 2; the one that caught my ear was the American Drew Petersen in Rachmaninov 1, who will presumably be first up in Friday's programme; he was also the stand-out for me in the semifinals."...the isle is full of noises,

The Schumann prosaically one dimensional I thought, no lift to the phrasing. Perhaps I still hear that remarkable Lisiecki Proms performance from two seasons ago; not many could live with that playing!
But the Schumann the other night wasn't as big a disaster as the Chinese player's Rach 3. The Russian finalist's version of the latter was somewhat better."...the isle is full of noises,
