We can do the 1960s and the 1970s too much.
These were old timers at the time of release, mid-late 1990s/early mid-2000s, slightly cheesy perhaps, but uplifting and often reaching globally in the jaws of mainstream music's defeat.
They made me happy - I'd see them all very much as mine or ours:
Joe Strummer - Johnny Appleseed - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4IbMiqIdeME
Kirsty MacColl - Us Amazonians - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZh9ayEmKHY
Lemonheads - If I Could Talk - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DbJ4QcEQ91w
Jonathan Richman - Miracles - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3LTDA1KHzg4
Tim Rose - Snowed In - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DWERkN-Amy0
Waterboys - The Christ in You - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=skgqieCwZRA
Van Morrison - Celtic New Year - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kpssck3YZKA
Crowded House - Together Alone - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6clOaNae8sg
Hothouse Flowers - Isn't It Amazing - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GvB11X5b1hY
(I accept the Tim Rose track is bleak but it's brilliant and uplifting in that way)
At its best I reached out to people 70% but these sort of songs were closer to 90% for them being more conceptual - there's a fair amount of spiritual here too for what it's worth. I'll be honest. I think I would have loved to have been a monastic hermit - it was the respect that Rory clearly showed to the communal monks that appealed to me - but I couldn't quite do it.
