The Somewhat Delayed Song Thread

Know that places on the internet operate in a vacuum but I can't deny it. I'm observing the current music event closely. I don't have kids. I'm learning things which is good. Miley Cyrus who was obscure to me appears to be a formidable tour de force. I could float the suggestion that it would be better if 24 hour networks at moments of atrocity could be replaced by brief regular news bulletins read in the style of Richard Baker and that those be required by law to operate a blackout replaced by footage of live music events of whatever kind. Music would then not merely be a reaction but prevention. Until then, once again we are being shown that a strong song is so much better than any non-ish song.

I have been plundering Spotify and listening to various recodings of MacArthur Park. Ridiculous lyrics but it is a really great song - so versatile that I've caught the Richard Harris - not a great singer but he gave it his all, glen Campbell two or three versions by him - live at RFH incldes his wonderful guitar playing, there's the Donna Summer marathon, Four Tops and a really fine high brass Maynard Ferguson rendition. A well sung version by Elaine Paige, and one by Beggars Opera.

It took me half a century to be sure that I knew who was the best woman in rock and pop of all time by far. Then it was so bloody obvious I realised it had been with me throughout and I mean throughout. Back in 1970, there seemed little point in growing upwards from the soil. Far better to blend into the flowers and, beneath those, the earth. These days such feelings need to be captured rather than orientated towards as naturally. That is the flaw of being required of this and that by benign or at least half-understandable human systems. Actually, a little more. Memories and identity may interweave. To say memories are flawed, and they may be, is just to have an odd agenda of usurping other's identities.

BSP - Such a strange band. Vocally average at best but so atmospheric. I swear that is one of the best ever guitar break endings in rock. And the entire track pumps on "Time Is Tight"! In indie, I often looked to be captivated in "Disney", even where dark. Goldfrapp live were (are?) truly magical in that way - the main writer, keyboardist and arranger so obviously classically trained - it's my pick of the bunch - but the Flaming Lips tick all the boxes, if vocally fragile. As if the rather good Dom Joly turned comic pathos into heart. On the Katy Perry, some doubt the personality. So be it. I happen to think she is an extraordinarily attractive woman who sings well enough. I also know that the song I have posted was partially written by Russell Brand. Not a fan but it doesn't come as a surprise. I just love the positivity in it and the traditional proper song structure. It's modernity at its best.

Here's a stronger version of one of the best pop records of the last decade from 2001 with appropriate acoustic swirl and swoon. A classic in a depleted sea: I was lucky enough to see it performed live outdoors in Spain ('03?) while a hang glider in the form of an ET bike was being flown high above in the clear night summer sky. People talk about it as the Bond theme that never was a Bond theme. I was in Aviation Directorate where we were trying to achieve with a degree of management the impossible. And it became especially resonant in my mind as a critical and positively western response to the ambitions of those responsible for 9/11 especially as it had broad sweep and was designed as apolitical.

Goldfrapp are on tonight around 7pm on the fringes. I just hope that BBC television gets there. Now 51, soprano Alison Goldfrapp with Will Gregory originally merged electronica with elements of early Berlin cabaret to stunning effect before tackling glam rock, sixties psychedelia and much else. When 20 years down the line, all the questions are asked about how and why commercial music declined, this is undoubtedly a duo who will be regarded as having adeptly kept some of the inventive and highly memorable approaches alive. One thing that is consistently notable is that while the best pop music until the 2000s was by "youth", that has moved to those who had to wait for acclaim until their 30s.
