A memorably abrupt ending - but will it win?

Ah-ha, ah-ha.
Cross "Platforms", I may have detected a sense of deja vu.
On this day 41 years ago:
My first trip alone to Central London, mainly on the 109 bus from Purley for what was it? 5 new pence? No map. Dressed like a plonker in a red scarf taken from my mother's drawer because of the order to wear such an item in the secret message. The second order was to walk around London's streets, at the time frequently bombed, and to find one of the Capital girls who'd be strolling around only for the reason of meeting me. This I duly did not knowing where the hell I was at any time and never finding such a girl in Oxford Street, Tottenham Court Road or The Strand. Consequently, I was unable to adhere to the third order which was to say on meeting one "Hi, I am wearing a red scarf as required and am here to collect my prize for having one of just ten in a million radio sets that can convey your secret message on a sub-carrier wave during KC and the Sunshine Band".
Somehow, I managed to find my way to Euston Towers where in the reception area the station's output some five hours later was audible and older people, 13-19, flitted about saying "oh darling, so good to see you" to each other while what I said was met with stony faces. "Just what are you on about, small boy?" The next day, a friend's mother with an uncanny link to 2017 said I should be grounded. What I had done was stupid and dangerous. I was lucky to get back home alive. My mother, who had worked at 14 in the blitz, was in contrast approving. My Dad tutted. The English teacher who had told us to write up a daily diary didn't believe me, marking me down for having an over-active imagination. I know I hadn't the slightest fear about not knowing where I was or being blown to pieces but was petrified that someone might say something a bit nasty to me about the scarf.

When I come to think of it, it was around that time I was put on tranquillisers for a brief while, only to return to them sporadically some 20 years later. The combination of being intelligent and as thick as a brick has its plus points but when one steps back from it the world's mid-range combination of rationality and irrationality can make it a scary place.

Just back from the hols out west. Holiday reading was 'You Know What You Could Be' by Mike Heron and Andrew Greig. The first part of the book is Heron's story of the start of the Incredible String Band in Edinburgh. It's then followed by Andrew Greig's story of growing up in the East Neuk of Fife in the mid-60s and the influence that the ISB had on his life and ISB-inspired band he formed and tried to get recorded. Greig is a very excellent writer - he wrote a wonderful book about the obscure golf courses of Scotland, 'Preferred Lies'; and also a terrific book about his hero and mentor, the great Scottish Poet, Norman MacCaig. Anyway, I only mention this because reading this very fine book, I was desperate to hear some the String Band songs as they were mentioned, but had no access. So here goes:

Generally I can't stand Peter Kay but I've been pleasantly surprised by "Car Share". A gentle comedy, frequently with the sound of eighties' radio in the background. Guess the year etc. Not sure why it hasn't been done in sitcom before. As a few long term contributors will know, I took a fairly dim view of eighties production when it came to most of rock and soul music - the beginning of the downhill slide - but I have a weakness for that decade's much maligned soppier confection. This one turned up in last night's episode and while its obvious limitations meant it didn't do much for me at the time, it sounded magnificent in its setting. The secret in the atmospherics - and this is an invitation for a predictable joke - is to turn the volume down and talk over it. Then it works, much as a lot of stuff from that less in your face era works. Well done to the producers of the programme for seeing it.

One good reason to do them is to rescue songs from undeserved obscurity.
Anyway, got to scoot, out to dinner as it's our 30th wedding anniversary today.
30 years ago today,a bank holiday Monday, Saints got a point at Chelsea, in from of all of 11k fans at the Bridge.
Seems like a different world.I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.
