Thats rather good, JC. never heard it before.

Yes, it was AK's show where I first heard Jim Ford.

      Van's best hymn/spiritual:

Van Morrison - Haunts of Ancient Peace - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTa5Bp9zpD4

      Glorious in my humble opinion.

And one of the very best mysteries of the sea:

June Tabor - Grey Funnel Line (Tawney) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=61FI86oV3qA

The June Tabor Ashore album is wonderful - Great sensitive piano from Huw Warren.

          Completely agree with you cloughie.

My wording went a bit awry - not a mystery as such but rather the song conveys the mystery of the sea.

That is one of my favourite musical themes.

Thanks Lat - listened to a few songs by Niles on the back of that. Not sure I'd heard anything by him before. The performance had me thinking that he had influenced a lot of acts who came later. Good story attached to 'I Wonder as I Wander' on the youtube page. As happens in youtube, when least expecting, the algorhithms can catch you unawares, and I was led to 'The Gallows Pole' by Leadbelly. Quality performance!

              Many thanks JC.

              My father is 86 today.

This man would have been 85 today had he not passed away earlier this year.

I am not sure we marked the occasion:

              Mystery Train - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WoVyfUhM2-o

Didn't attract lots of attention, Lat...maybe I put it in the wrong place.

Anyway thanks for the reminder and Happy Birthday to your Dad...hope it's a great one.
Have you ever seen the Jarmusch film 'Mystery Train'?...I loved it. Strummer's in it, Screamin' Jay's in it, Buscemi's in it, among others! Here's a trailer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nb0yBDSqTfs
I think you can watch it on youtube...not sure what the quality's like.

Oh, so you did post it. That's interesting. It may have been while I was taking a break from the forum. I am not sure. Thank you for your kind comments re yesterday's birthday. We had a nice evening with Morecambe and Wise. Not sure about "Mystery Train". I should have seen it. I've seen other films which featured Joe Strummer. I will investigate.

A belated happy birthday here - if I am not mistaken (and I might be), this man was 98 on Christmas Eve:

                  Dave Bartholomew - The Monkey - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9vZeLSwz-Dw

(Interesting comments on the link - Prince Buster, Manu Chao - I think Gil Scott-Heron has to be there too)

Since Kershaw's been getting a bit of an outing this last week, I recall him playing the Dave Bartholomew track segued with this old anti-evolution tune by Uncle Dave Macon which popped up on 'Goodbye Babylon'. Genius!

The brilliance of that link is only surpassed by your recall of it occurring. I am very tempted to focus on birthdays in this thread from now on as an antidote to all the RIP threads (being careful not to go too far down the line of world, jazz and other closely related music which belong elsewhere). Marianne Faithfull is 70 today. Here is an earlyish flowering:

I'm not a fan of honours as such, but if you're going to have them then Ray Davies seems to me the perfect person to give one. For me he's up there with the great English songwriters of the 20th Century. Here he is in great form on Arthur:
Some Mother's Son: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=seMc_UaE3FQ - for me one of the great war songs.

                          I like Ray Davies.

Is there a song with 2017 in the title?

Well, yes, oddly enough there is and it was written in 1976.

I am not overly keen on it but it sounds like entering a new year.

It also has a lot of mixed messages which seem apt.

Good vocalist that Micky Dolenz, Lat, I used to think, and he seems to still have the voice. Harry Nilsson had great voice too whether singing other people's songs or performing his own. Here he is with that totally classic Fred Neil cover.

Talking of 60s bands making new records, I never thought I'd ever get a Stones' record again but their new record of Blues covers arrived courtesy of that nice Mr Claus and it makes me wonder why the hell they didn't do this ages ago. Here's a crackin' take on Magic Sam's 'All of your Love' with Mick showing that the lips can still wrap around his moothie and make some fine sounds.

                                1. Susan Tedeschi - one of the best current soul voices - was back with ace guitarist Derek Trucks in 2016 for the CD "Let Me Get By". Have to say the songs were not on the whole as appealing as I would have wished but I really liked "Hear Me". Elsewhere, their "Tiny Desk Concert" enabled them to display their rockier "Allman Brothers" thing to good effect:

                                Tedeschi Trucks Band:

"Hear Me" from the CD - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9fNH2PmX0WE

NPR Tiny Desk Concert - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RRipadkd6wk

                                2. Another underrated CD from 2016:

                                "FLOTUS"

This CD by Lambchop was as odd as we have come to expect from Lambchop. As someone said, it is Nashville meets Krautrock (but another person thought he could hear Curtis Mayfield). The critics asked whether it was political. The answer apparently is no. It is a testament to "singer" Kurt Wagner's long suffering wife, Mary Mancini, who just happens to be Chair of the Tennessee Democratic Party and has previously run for the senate. This track, though, as its title (and the lyrics?) in no way suggest is about a Quaker wedding.

                                The Hustle - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cf9wz5esgAo

                                (The 18 minutes single version!)

                                3. I'm also picking "Lighthouse" by David Crosby, 75, which is a highly distinctive delight.

I can't believe how his voice has stood the test of time - and the arrangements are excellent:
