Seems the Proclaimers knew all about pandemics, and how to control them , all those years ago..........

Great to hear the Auchtermuchty twosome, sainty. I know this isn't some kind of connection thread, but the Reids' mention of John Bull immediately made me think of the wonderful Chris Wood and his rendition of 'John Ball'. ' Labour and spin for the fellowship you're in, labour and spin for the love of one another.'

Elsa Lanchester - The Yashmak Song

Provided to YouTube by The Orchard EnterprisesThe Yashmak Song · Elsa LanchesterSongs For a Shuttered Parlor (Digitally Remastered)℗ 2009 Essential Media Gro...

This comes from the second of two LPs that Lanchester released in the late 1960s under the
heading 'Bawdy Cockney Songs'. Lanchester sounds a little unhinged throughout but, when
'imitating the sounds of the Bazaar' she sounds genuinely deranged. The song starts with a
less than enthusiastic introduction by Charles Laughton (Lanchester's husband).

one I discovered today, from way back when.
nothing very dramatic stylistically, but a really good song.
A band I missed first time round, but very much up my street.

One of my favourite singles, ( still) from a band who just a few times reached very great heights. Both highly atmospheric and full of Rock n Roll energy.

Judee Sill is one of these singers that I forget about and then I hear something and find myself compelled to go back to those wonderful songs that she created in her all too short career. She strikes a bit like Nick Drake, never really appreciated enough in her lifetime. Last night on 6 Music, towards the end of their International Women's Day special, Gideon Coe played a BBC recording of her in the Paris Theatre in 1972/1973. I love her music stripped down like this - sometimes there could be a bit too much orchestral accompaniment on the records for my liking. Here she is, introduced by Whisperin' Bob, singing 'The Kiss'...a truly wonderful song.

Since listening to Laura Barton's great love letter to the Boss on R4 last week, I've been delving into a bit of Bruce - keep coming back to the wonderful demo of 'Growin' Up'- so beautifully raw.

Watched a very enjoyable doc about Johnny Cash yesterday on sky arts, with some great contributions from the likes of Rodney Crowell and Roseanne Cash. Of course, it finished with the sessions he di with Rick Rubin, who helped revitalise his career, and it ended with 'Hurt' recorded not long before his death...only 71 when he died. 'Hurt' is a wonderful end of life performance song by the legendary Man in Black.

As a former 'Countdown' contestant, I was naturally sorry to hear of the death of Marcel Stellman - I didn't know that he wrote the lyrics for 'Tulips From Amsterdam'.
