Well, people on YT have mentioned the Beatles in regard to "Grasshopper" but there is more than a hint of the grand Lindisfarne too, isn't there! Perhaps it is no coincidence that the latter hardly lived "centrally" either given they hailed from North Shields. There would be a mention for Free from the period with the Londoner Kossoff in actuality being of Russian Jewish background and Curved Air with the delightful Sonja Kristina "from Essex", the daughter of a criminologist and granddaughter of Swedish actress Gerda Lundequist.

Circa 1973-74, "the Netherlands" were in the "pop charts" at a time when simply being from the continent was a novelty. Not many more words are needed but Focus who had not one but two records in the same Top 30 seemed to acknowledge their novelty status in some of their music. Meanwhile, Golden Earring produced what some describe as one of the best records ever to drive to and others might observe has a distinct timeless quality that isn't exactly pretty but it does really strike at something that has transcended the years:

Re the earlier post - and this really shouldn't be a footnote - the property known as Bron-Yr-Aur. While essentially it was "visited", that perhaps above all else supports my case. Led Zep have had ability to find support from the widest range of audiences over an extraordinary length of time. Music academics may note the significance of the "organics":

Oh, awright then, three from the Americans in what will be a third in a row. The first will completely thrill 30% of forum members but hardly anyone will say so. The second is closer to punk rock than many admit. As for the third, I used to "know" a jukebox where it stuck in a wonderful way so that it was a 93 minute record unless somebody kicked.

last time I posted a Pete Astor song, somebody complained because he sang a tiny bit out of tune , or something.

anyway, nuts to that, the man is a song machine.

Might have been me ts - I resemble that kind of remark. If it was - he hasn't improved - still if that lights your candle - he sounds a bit like Crispan St Peters but not as good.

incidentally, given this stuff about the supposed deficiencies in his singing , you might be interested in finding out what his day job is now......

in the UK? To do that you need to be well above Prophet level ,( especially since he almost prayed, but presumably didn't quite manage it) in fact you need very Lofty ambitions in that job.

I'm currently interested in how the wonderful Carole King and Neil Sedaka both wrote in the Brill Building except one of the two didn't. Sedaka was on the other side of the street. Then, how King and Sedaka both completely disappeared after 1962-63 except in truth one of the two didn't do that either. King was writing lots while Sedaka was playing if not in Butlins then, astonishingly, on the working mens' club circuit in the North of England. Then there is interest in the way Sedaka tried in parallel to find his way back via some very odd releases in Italy and the Far East. And I'm also interested in how the 1970s version of King is so closely linked to James Taylor and yet there is that more direct link in many ways between her "Tapestry" in 1971 and Sedaka's re-emergence. I find that whole enigma of the Sedaka thing interesting. The way in which he is both a brilliant songwriter and too nice a guy ever to have been a convincing rock n roller although he sold big in that sort of area. The way in which there is an almost frightening element in him of schmaltz.

I am interested in his ultimate abandonment of Howard Greenfield which while painful was as coldly businesslike as a McCartney and I am interested in a potential compare and contrast between the lyrical ways of Greenfield's replacement Cody and Taupin. Finally, I'm interested in the role of 10CC in the Sedaka albums of the mid 1970s. So what were Sedaka's attempts between 1963 and 1971 not to be knocked out with many others by The Beatles? Well, detailed research suggests they would best be described as random, ranging from, yes, the interesting to the dreadful. This is where it all surfaced just before anyone could say "It's Too Late" and when Billy Joel was looking for some sort of lead.

See Macarthur Park and Nilsson beforehand then Newman's 1972 album Sail Away. Possibly early Waits.

Certainly early Springsteen as well as Joel. Both 1972-1974.... and also 10CC's "How Dare You" etc etc!

(I might provide a few examples of what he attempted in the missing 1960s years in due course!)

OK, don't blame me for this post but those "efforts" as promised. This is the ultimate historical example of a music man who was at the top of his game and then completely "lost it" for nearly a decade. I find it fascinating how he is attempting throughout the sixties to ape everything that is "happening" and failing as well as venturing way beyond Brooklyn.

Not one of the nine songs is a success although the quality improves slightly. Mostly, it's a catalogue of catastophe. The tenth track is one of the finest middle-of-the-road songs ever written. Springsteen fans may hate me for this observation but there was a weaving. Actually, 4th of July came first. With a few exceptions, it was also Bruce at his best.

Everything anyone ever needs to know about Bruce Springsteen. It will be unusually brief. But let's set the scene. The greatest of his album tracks that was not released as a single is this one, not least because it is in the heart of the man. What it isn't, though it is its starkest of contrasts, is 'he's a real..."Nowhere Man"'. More shortly but not huge amounts:
