Barbara Bonney; Verschwiegene Liebe - Hugo Wolf. Exquisite

At the other extreme, delicious raunch from Lucinda Williams Passionate Kisses
and even more so: : Essence "I am waiting here for more..."

Also Joni Mitchell: Case of You - "you are in my blood like holy wine"

Am See (Schubert ) with Karl Erb - a little masterpiece contemplating infinity. I love the fadaway end: Sterne, gar viele. (Stars, lots of them!)
Similarly, the famous Nacht und Träume. I love Nancy Argenta with Melvyn Tan on fortepiano.
    A nice post.

I like the fado artist Ana Moura's version of "A Case of You" too:

A Case of You, de Joni Mitchell, cantado por Ana Moura no cd Desfado, de 2012

The Clash really should have covered this one.

I can hear Joe Strummer singing it in my head.

    Cornelius Cardew - British Imperialism:

A lovely song from an excellent band, IMO.

Ah yes, they of the extraordinary "He's Simple, He's Dumb, He's the Pilot" and the very daft but warm "The Animal World". What did happen to the Fambly Cat?

Anyways, sensing a trend here what with Wayne and the Lips too, it has to be Mercury Rev, doesn't it, to make it a trio. Who needs cinema when film is sound? :

Oh that's very good if it turns out you like them. I believe they were the NME winners of Album of the Year with "Deserter's Songs" at the tail end of the 1990s just ahead of the year in which The Flaming Lips' "The Soft Bulletin" won it - 1998 and 1999? Something along those lines and a very similar trajectory in that anything earlier from either and it is extremely experimental. The Rev don't do humour or fun in the way the Lips do but they do emote with rather thin vocal which rather than irritating works brilliantly because they have proper musical heads. They can also be very much a pared down indie rock band in a live setting. Anyway, start with "Deserter's Songs" if you wish and move forwards. I particularly like "The Secret Migration" although commercially it didn't sell well. And they are not always quite as contemplative as the first of the following two clips will reveal.

Clip two is a nod to the OP in that it veers towards a certain sort of rock. It ties in a tad with classical sensibilities too. I have to post it because I still rate it as I did back in the day. It shows that there were things around other than punk if anyone felt open to a range of stuff. And THAT I believe is one of the greatest pop/rock/classical voices of all time:

All of this is keeping me away from updating my fantasy football team. But three things on BSP. One, they are OK. Two, the ending on Larson is unbelievably sublime. Even better than a "Fool's Gold". Three, the documentary film they produced the soundtrack to is utterly fantastic. I will shut up now so that I can contemplate why S Aguero isn't performing:

Don't get me wrong. I haven't got Aguero. Only YYT and he will have to be shifted. Elsewhere, brought in Martial for Benteke last week through gritted teeth. Position: 726,336.

Sam Smith is at number one with the first Bond theme to reach number one. I don't like the lyric. Suffocation? My goodness me. Not convinced by his voice either. Very strange intonation. Sounds fake. Which is the best? Bassey, great as she is, is too obvious. Let's go controversially (in the nicest way) "On the Buses". Alternative suggestions welcomed:

nb Genuinely I am not a number and I refuse to be pigeon holed by survey-sheet radio executives. It all makes sense to me thanks!

                            Less obvious Bassey:

Shirley Bassey's theme song for Moonraker (1979)Lyrics:Where are you? Why do you hide?Where is that moonlight trail that leads to your side?Just like the Moo...

Nancy, yes - not sure about Sheena; the Bond films without a Barry score were never as good, IMO. I'd vote for Thunderball well before FYEO - and the rest of the score, too; that haunting alto flute theme made the otherwise tedious slow-motion underwater scenes riveting!
