I bought 'New York Mining Disaster 1941' as a single shortly after it came out and I've often thought the BeeGees were a very fine group, although Barry was never particularly likeable. Anyway there was a very good doc from 2014 aired tonight on BBC2 with John Lydon and Alex Petridis very forceful in support of the lads.

...and some fine tunes, not including this rather excellent version of 'Massachusetts'.

I noticed the Bee Gees doc and have it stacked to watch dreckly! I always think that those few singles in the 60s 'NYMD 1941', 'To Love Somebody', 'Massachusetts', 'Words', 'I gotta get a message to you' were excellent and in many ways superior to the 70s and later stuff with very unnatural (electronically enhanced, pitch tweeked) voices. NYMD is a great song to sing a cappella.

I haven't watched it yet. I will certainly add my voice in support of their considerable contribution but I have to say there was a time when I felt that I should listen properly to the epic sixties' albums. Odessey And Oracle, Days of Future Passed, Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake etc.......and Odessa was in that group. It didn't float my boat as much as I had hoped but then the same could also be said of the others and it isn't as if I don't like any of them. I do like "First of May" as a topical follow on from "April Come She Will" - the "when I was small and Christmas trees were tall" - plus in that order it makes the Simon and Garfunkel one seem like a false ending. Re "never particularly likeable", I didn't know it and I last heard that phrase on the Downs in September. Ray - a big 10CC fan in his time - spoke of Eric Stewart in those terms. I was surprised to hear it especially from him and I didn't know it either.

I had a lovely catch-up on i-player with Loudon Wainwright 111 yesterday - 'The First Time....' Among some fine stuff in there was his No 1 hit in Little Rock, Arkansas - he said he liked to imagine Bill and Hill making out to it way back when... - 'Dead Skunk' - had forgotten how much I enjoyed it - you can feel it in your olfactory!

Spotify threw this old Dory Previn track at me today, and I appreciated it. There was a time when this record existed in almost all flats I went to.

If anybody can find me a better song than this, with fewer views, I'll be impressed.

Not quite sure what you're getting at ts - with fewer views? Nice enough song but it reminds me of some other song(s). I think I could find a few 'better' songs. The lead singer has a very pleasant, easy to listen to voice.
Looking at some of their stuff on Spotify I see they do Barrett's Privateers and unaccompanied as it should be!

What I meant was a better song that has fewer Youtube views. I don't think you can see the number of views on the embedded video, but on the full youtube video it shows about 400 views. Anyway, just a talking point really.

Yes , Swill has a really good voice, and is a fine singer IMO.

The Beach Boys made some very strange promo videos for some of their releases, I am noticing. Carl seems particularly guilty. Here's the excellent 'Wake the World' from the underrated LP 'Friends'.
the, beach, boys, wake, world, promo, promotional, 1968, music, video, friends, album, record, brian, wilson, dennis, carl, al, jardine, mike, love, bruce, johnston, Carl Wilson, Brian Wilson

...and from 'Surf's Up', Carl's wonderful melancholy composition 'Long Promised Road'.
the, beach, boys, long, promised, road, 1971, promo, video, surfs, up, carl, brian, dennis, wilson, mike, love, al, jardine

Wonderful Vocals with a great middle 8.

Lovely stuff, JC. Tempted me into a quick buy of Friends and 20/20 double pack.
I'm only really familiar with Pet Sounds and the hits, so this shold be fun to explore.

So much from that time seems full of possibilities, ( not just pop music), and so much around today, well, doesn't. But that is probably perspective, and nostalgia for a (musical) time I don't really remember.

ts, Those Beach Boys Twofers are all good and mostly available at a reasonable price Today/Summer Days and Smiley Smile/Wild Honey are time-wise before and after Pet Sounds and show Brian Wilson's build up to PS and the failed attempts to match it later but some very good stuff there - all part of your 60s learning curve! A couple recent construction jobs on Beach Boys albums are the Beach Boys Party with several takes including tracks with the party bits omitted, and 1967 Sunshine Tomorrow which is based around the construction of the Wild Honey and Brian's breakdown projected Smile album, which finally emerged as a Brian Wilson remake in 2004. Probably not a masterpiece but at the price it is now available for....

I love 'Wild Honey'. Listened to it loads when it came out, though 'Friends' beats it for me especially with the wonderful Brian Bossa Nova laid back 'Busy Doin'Nothin'' a real stand out. Some fine Dennis songs on there too, including 'Little Bird' and his very Brian influenced, 'Be Still'.
Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

I've got a Sunflower/ Surf's Up twofer, as you so eloquently put it, cloughie. When Surf's Up is great it is truly wondrous, though it's got the dreadful 'Student Demonstration Time' which I recall in the old Vinyl days being the moment you had to stand up, walk over to the record player, lift the stylus and turn the record over.
A couple of years later there appeared the wonderful 'Holland', which, alongside 'Friends', is probably my favourite post-'Pet Sounds' Beach Boys record. Not sure they really did anything after that.

Two later albums which were interesting were the Mike Love led Summer in Paradise which has a retro Surfing feel to it - it was largely given bad reviews but it is a studio recording of the 'on the road' Beach Boys in the early 90s and the last one with Carl on it! The other is the 50th Anniversary reunion album That's why God made the Radio - I think I liked that because it actually happened with Mike Love and Brian Wilson putting their differences behind them for a short while. I think that 20/20 is probably my post Pet Sounds favourite but each one has its charms!
