Till this turned up on the radio yesterday morning I hadn't realised that Aretha had recorded as early as 1961. I assume she's about 18 or 19 here. Knockout! Got to thinking that maybe Janis had been listening to this at some point.

Interesting that Aretha's Columbia albums in the 60s saw her en route to the 'American Songbook' repertoire but the move to Atlantic steered her very quickly in the Soul direction, which she clearly led well into the 70s but thereafter I think she was totally mis-managed musically with very few good tracks in the last 35 or so years. The best of her career, the Atlantic recordings can be found on two 5CD sets Original Album series. I see there is a forthcoming release of some of her Atlantic vocals given the RPO treatment. I don't think these treatments are a good idea - leave the originals alone they stood or failed as they were. Her 2014 Sings the Great Diva Classics is probably the most disappointing album she ever recorded, very poor singing and really a mistake.

A great example of an apparently simple,but dramatically effective song. One of my favourite singles. Guaranteed goosebumps.

I still miss someone is a lovely song and there are some lovely versions - Joan Baez, Crystal Gayle, Linda Ronstadt- found this one which I had not heard but a young Joni combines well with Johnny Cash - not sure about the ethereal strings but I like the vocals.

Among some crackin' tracks on a gospel compilation attached to Mojo magazine, I got completely taken by surprise by this one from Charlie Rich....'Big Man'.

I will read/listen to the recent contributions soon. That is the better - and mostly the more rewarding - way. I don't know why I want this first one now - I am not a big fan of hers - actually in some ways I really do know but anyhow - it's a place and a time. A new job. Funny bloke as a colleague - unhelpful and insulting. Oddly he did me a tape. I saw the human side to him via it and because he did it. It stayed in my mind. Also, the Genesis track. I love atmospherics/twists in the tale. He had classical stuff on there too. I'd got "his brain".
