Britain's Got Talent. Obviously I can't stand it and never watch it but this performance turned up on Gogglebox and I was initially won over by it. A second hearing away from the ludicrous hype reveals its limitations - I'd say in the enunciation - but in truth there aren't that many and given this is a 15 year old I still think it is impressive enough to post here.

(Actually, on a third hearing I think I am won over by it again in an Aretha and Gladys sort of way)Last edited by Lat-Literal; 27-04-17, 16:55.

As for SAHB week, I dip into SAHB quite often these days, after having not listened for years. I really liked them back in the day, but I was too young to appreciate just how good he/they were (I try not to forget the band, of course Alex was the phenomenon, but the band were excellent).
Interesting observation about Queen, I’ve never thought about it like that.

A few weeks back waiting for the Oban Ferry in Craignure I went into the Mull and Iona Community Trust Charity Shop. Picked up a couple of CDs in the process one being by the Tiger Lilies. I'd never heard of them before but was attracted by the cover and the presence of the Kronos Quartet - 'Gorey End'! Over the following weeks I became a wee bit obsessed by the record, though I was scared to play it to anyone else, so I enjoyed it alone in the car. Magnificent. Here they are doing 'Trampled Lilly'. I mean that is a voice!

You seem to have seriously got away with choosing a CD because of its cover (and perhaps some confidence in the Kronos).
I’m going to check out 'Gorey End'.
Thanks for a terrific link!

Here's a record I remember buying in 1989. I was totally fixated by the cover and then, when I turned it over, by the very persuasive sleeve notes by one Charlie Gillett, a fellow at that time unknown to me.
...and I'd still have it on my desert island all these years on.
"Coumba" is a melancholy love song, that Rudy Gomis, one of the founding members of Orchestra Baobab, wrote for his first wife after they divorced.Orchestra ...

My occasional Prefab moment. Not that I expect my huge enthusiasm to be shared but I will always be banging this drum. No one can change my mind. As Mrs Slocombe used to say, I am unanimous in that. Newcastle or thereabouts. The equal of Jimmy Webb and can I say McCartney? I could almost convince myself. I missed this release. March 2017. Paddy McAloon. As always, we thought we'd seen the last of him. Not sure what to make of it. We have had the years when we were told he has hundreds of unreleased albums in the vaults. There is still hope. Then there was the period when he went virtually blind although his sight slightly recovered. Actually, I am far from sure that it ever did. Anyhow, at 59, Britain's greatest singer songwriter from the 1980s seems to get ever more mysterious and sad. Has he lost it? I don't know - but he is and always was criminally underrated.

Incidentally, on that last track which I view as typical, one thing I love along with its light artiness, strong structure and lyrical sense is the enunciation. The proper t's and the long a's with no hint of pomposity. It isn't non transatlantic although it could be accused of transatlanticism. Rather he somehow manages to Britishfy the process. It's in the mid-Atlantic in a way that no one else has ever achieved while the northern aspect is also achieved with the shorter a's. The entire product is surrounded by what can only be described as the allure of a dream. Plus it has presence for being timeless. And, yes, it is wholly unsurprising that he returns now with a contemporary American reference, both overt and opaque.
