I know the main thread for the following is on the jazz forum but this one gives me the opportunity to post my main memory which was with Paul Simon.
Farewell to the GREAT Toots Thielemans -
Anyhow, not that anyone asked for it or should have done, this:
(a guilty pleasure)
Which leads me onto Dexys who were always one of my bands and their latest gives me a lot more pleasure than it should do:

Am currently wading into the "best of" lists in mainstream rock and pop music for 2010/12-2016 which I have largely, rightly, overlooked. Inevitably, coming from critics, they sometimes have an alternative leaning while my preferences are such that within that category I often look for elements of classicism. That narrows it all down considerably.
And, given these times, even then I'm often not too sure..
Anyhow, from the Richmond Fontaine stable:
The Delines - I Won't Slip Up - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJG5qUuAkEE
Also...albeit a bit too obviously retro:
JD McPherson - Head Over Heels - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rXn_O8yECCQ
Rather like this which has enough of the 1970s in it even if in the vocal it is also the 2000s stylistically:
Jessica Pratt - Moon Dude - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_tycHRjBBAA
I may post a few more shortly.Last edited by Lat-Literal; 03-09-16, 19:27.

It would be too much to expect a Planet Music series to accompany Planet Earth II, however enjoyable Music Planet was as an accompaniment to Human Planet. However, as the trailers arrive for the new one by the remarkable Richard Attenborough, Sigur Ros. You wouldn't want hours of them but a few minutes here and there is always a wonderful thing:

Stopped off for a pint of Timothy Taylor Landlord at a semi-rural pub on my four/five mile walk today. There was a version of the first song on the speaker - Jamie Cullum? Gary Barlow? - which may have been at number one for weeks for all I know but you can't beat the original. The second is posted following a TV documentary on Bill Withers recently:

The Troika song:

I Believe in Father Christmas - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RXCEdrnaFlY
The film was quite ground breaking in 1975, oddly perhaps more for the camels etc than the war scenes (which had been covered in song at Christmas by Lennon).
It was, of course, nearly a decade before Band Aid and it upset those who just wanted "party party" but the song was intelligent and both song and film stood out.Last edited by Lat-Literal; 10-12-16, 22:14.
