Thanks to a fairly recent reminder from Joe Boyd, and a fortunate encounter in a junk shop I have been recently reunited with the wonderful 'Car Wheels on a Gravel Road' by Lucinda Williams. I played it endlessly on an old cassette when it came out, but as is the way of such things it drifted to the back of the drawer. Anyway, there's loads to choose from on this magnificent record but 'Greenville' with support from Emmylou is a haunting delight, in my opinion.

I hadn't even heard of Lucinda Williams until a friend recommended Car Wheels when it came out. I was quickly hooked and now have (I think) all her albums and she did a great gig when we went to see her in concert. Her latest, Ghosts of Highway 20, following the death of her father, has just appeared and is well up to standard. It features, interestingly, Bill Frisell [Guitar Right], Greg Leisz [Guitar Left]. I can't remember seeing a stereo split named like that before.

I hadn't heard her before 'Car Wheels' either, gurney. It was a great favourite of Kershaw who played it loads when it came out. I do intend to go have a look at 'Ghosts of Highway' especially after my re-visit to 'Car Wheels'. Meantime, you might like a listen to Joe Boyd's 10 minute podcast on what he calls 'A jewel of an album...the Blonde on Blonde for the Nineties'.

That song which was a massive Top 3 hit in the UK in 1971 - and written by Joe "Games People Play" South - arguably suffered from too much airplay. To me as an eight year old it was one of a number that went round and round. My parents described it as "corny". I am now struck by its immediacy which is in the melody, the lyrics and the arrangement and how striking she was in appearance and in voice. She sadly goes at 67. However, I invite readers to listen to the rather good Neko Case here and to consider the vocal similarities:

Yes - a couple of months apart. Dec 1970-ish and Feb 1971-ish.

Australians New World were also in the chart with "Rose Garden".

But here is a curious something I have never heard before:

I've always liked the song and I like this version too.

One of my favourite Beatles' songs wonderfully produced by the late Sir George. 'Rain', the b-side of 'Paperback Writer' I seem to recall. Great John vocals and no bad drumming either.

Not being a Beatles completist, I didn't know this song until it turned up on the B side of a Yeah Yeah Noh EP in the mid 80's.

Its a bit of an ear worm for me, pops up in my brain every so often.

                      well something has to !!

do they play that at your newly renamed stadium, JC?
should do, if that doesn't get the Buddies flying , nothing will.

it'd put the frightners on the soap dodgers on Derby day. ( I love that description).

Here's another favourite, 'Glass Onion' from the White Album. Once again wonderfully produced.
