Thanks to a fairly recent reminder from Joe Boyd, and a fortunate encounter in a junk shop I have been recently reunited with the wonderful 'Car Wheels on a Gravel Road' by Lucinda Williams. I played it endlessly on an old cassette when it came out, but as is the way of such things it drifted to the back of the drawer. Anyway, there's loads to choose from on this magnificent record but 'Greenville' with support from Emmylou is a haunting delight, in my opinion.

I hadn't even heard of Lucinda Williams until a friend recommended Car Wheels when it came out. I was quickly hooked and now have (I think) all her albums and she did a great gig when we went to see her in concert. Her latest, Ghosts of Highway 20, following the death of her father, has just appeared and is well up to standard. It features, interestingly, Bill Frisell [Guitar Right], Greg Leisz [Guitar Left]. I can't remember seeing a stereo split named like that before.

To me as an eight year old it was one of a number that went round and round. My parents described it as "corny". I am now struck by its immediacy which is in the melody, the lyrics and the arrangement and how striking she was in appearance and in voice. She sadly goes at 67. However, I invite readers to listen to the rather good Neko Case here and to consider the vocal similarities:

Australians New World were also in the chart with "Rose Garden".
But here is a curious something I have never heard before:

I've always liked the song and I like this version too.

Here's another favourite, 'Glass Onion' from the White Album. Once again wonderfully produced.
