    Great!.....Super!:

Lindisfarne's "Run For Home" is the lyrical contrast to "Take The Long Way Home" and it is my preference because I'm very close to that band - Alan Hull was a people's poet and I identify with the North East of England - but the first Supertramp link (1979) easily segues with the 1995 blast of youth that was the second. I wasn't removed from the latter whatever my age at the time and I was more involved. I'm not sure "home" was uppermost then in my sentiment. In terms of categorising they couldn't be more different. No one sticks these two together. But there is a vocal equivalence and both do melody fantastically well. Also unexpectedly, the former could be simple and the latter advanced - 3 and 4:

I do think the Ian Dury song deserved much more success. One of my favourites of his.

The thing about Rod is that he has a voice like sandpaper but he sings in tune, sings with conviction and always appears to enjoy what he is doing. His American Songbook recordings do lack something in timing and delivery but songs like 'I don't want to talk about it' from the Atlantic Crossing album are spot on. The Faces era recordings maybe we're his best overall.

Or in 'You wear it well' with the mandolin player borrowed from Lindisfarne. Their songs such as 'Lady Eleanor' and 'Meet me on the corner' were gems.

                I like it!

The Python Lee Jackson, as you probably know, was recorded in 1968.

It has hallmarks of the sixties but was successful in 1972.

no apologies for posting this on two threads.

It says it all, as far as I am concerned.
A very moving and powerful song, to say the least.

                        France 1:

Having sidestepped it all day as I don't like tragedy as entertainment, my mind is on one of the two countries into which I would have chosen to have been born had I not been British. Simplicity, as always, is key. Vanessa was still really a child at the time of this link. A lot wouldn't choose it but I've always liked its very natural quality and its ambiance. It has been a mixed picture with her ever since - isn't life? - but there are high points and she retains a non-obvious charm which I have always liked more than obvious charm:

Vanessa Paradis at 15 - Joe Le Taxi - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ulay2FvUEd8

Aw....go on then, while "Strictly" is on, they won't notice:

Frida Boccara - Un Jour Un Enfant - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rub6mOmOoCU

(But does it sound like "And This Is My Beloved"?)

                                How To Be Cool:

                                Hello again Rob

                                (a) Shop Assistants

There is a story there - isn't there always? In somewhere that seemed very youthful on Victoria Street I bought Todd Terry's "Batmobile" at 27 in 1989 - I hid the other purchase, a COTB album, on the grounds that it was a collection from 1970-72 and the bloke behind the counter was barely 18 and wouldn't know General Johnson. "Effing cool", he says, and I reply "Oh yeah, Todd's the man". "No" - he says - "No". "Chairmen of the Board". I was staggered. He would have just been born when they were current. We have spoken about Kylie and her intonation today and she did a cover version around that time. But no one could quite do the vocal thing that Johnson produced, intonation or not:

Chairmen of the Board - Give Me Just a Little More Time - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JMfxQq1GCMg

                                (b) Accountants:

I never did parties. I certainly didn't do accountants. One nevertheless got dragged along to these things in the 1980s. Our little group was a bit "indie" but it was her party for her work folk. She was unusually nervous. I was told the crowd would be mainstream-indie. I was supposed to be "the music man" so what could I bring? Genuinely, I had little money.

I said she would be shocked how few records I had. Most stuff was "ancient". OK, she said, but bring it anyway! Well, it was like a wake as the four indie albums were played and in desperation "she" - and I'm not going into detail except to say she is still in my life - said "it's going to have to be a few of your things, it's got that difficult.". They all got up and danced and went crazy. She loved it and was very bewildered. I was too. We did the analysis afterwards. We concluded that people are just "interesting" when it comes to music:
