That leaves a dilemma. While I have a preference for mellow Neil over "Crazy Horse" Neil, I have to post this one somewhere and GT may not countenance it. It hardly complies with the "end of rock" declaration but it is the last time I saw a headliner at Glastonbury. By way of justification to the amateur poets among us, I would just say that the man was so gloriously thunderous he merged into the weather and if human beings are ever really to "conquer" the planet, it will only be achieved by them literally becoming its elements:

Neil Young - Rocking in the Free World, Live 2009 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4edwbmjLokY

(Have a feeling the man in the front row at 2.50 in bright, erm, "Ireland" green is familiar - may be wrong - looks too young but counter-intuitively it is the safest place to be!)

Actually, this gives me the opportunity to plug Croydon's very own Bob Stanley because a little known fact is that he is the closest thing to a serious "pop music" musicologist. The Rices, Gambaccini and Read have a remit that is broader. Rock he most definitely isn't........and yet and yet........here he is with his group with a very successful Neil Young cover:

Bob & Saint Etienne - Only Love Can Break Your Heart - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vZAajrxvDs4

Good decision, sainty - that was brilliant - haven't heard it before.
This is a cover that Neil made with Jack White in the recording booth - I love it.

excellent stuff JC. very direct and raw, and a classic song. Only knew it from the Cash version.

I know I have plugged it on here before, but Le Noise, which contains " Love and War" really is a top class album, an unhesitating recommendation.
and there are used copies for £1.50 on amazon.you'll be lucky (or very smart)if you spend £2.50 better this weekend.

Yes - that is excellent. I am not familiar with "Le Noise" (2010) - the last ones bought were "Prairie Wind" (2005) and "Living With War" (2006) which is very full on - you can hear the Daniel Lanois in it and his link with the title but it is more Young than Lanois which is good. On the second link, I will strongly defend Gordon Lightfoot against critics - especially that song but also 15 plus others - and Young's gives it a different quality. Actually, I think vocally it would be possible to link Lightfoot with Nick Drake but that's another matter.

If I am not wholly mistaken, we have somehow moved into the label "Canadians".

But it might be the moment to tie up a few loose ends with the category "minds":

              Nilsson - Everybody's Talkin' - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2AzEY6ZqkuE

Really, really appreciate that comment and from anyone it's the equivalent to winning on the lottery.

More importantly, I hope that you and other people enjoyed the combination. That pleases me more.

Absolutely no practical application, mate, and couldn't "sell" even for free - I'd freeze at that point.

Well, having mentioned him, here is my main "pop music" Englishman of the 1968-72 period. Did one of the three albums reach any sort of chart at the time? Probably not. The second of the three albums sold fewer than 3,000 records and the others may have sold less. Melody Maker referred to the first simply as "poetic" and "interesting" and NME wrote that there was "not nearly enough variety to make it entertaining". Right. Contrast with the glowing accolades in the 1990s which effectively placed Drake long after his death above all comparable contemporaries. Robert Kirby's strings are important. Starting himself in an unknown group called "The Gentle Power of Song", Kirby commented on Drake's lyrics that they were a "series of extremely vivid, complete observations, almost like a series of epigrammatic proverbs" though he doubted that Drake saw himself as "any sort of poet". Instead he believed that Drake's lyrics were crafted to "complement and compound a mood that the melody dictates in the first place." Possibly - though each understated.

Not having the confidence himself to deliver the "Delius or Ravel" remit for the orchestration of "River Man" - and goodness knows why not - that task was handed by Kirby to Harry Robertson who performed a magic that was close to a miracle. I don't go along with the idea of approaching Drake as tragic or tortured although he had considerable and regrettable difficulties. It seems to me that it takes away from what he did in words and music. He was a poet. He was an England of its time and yet as if it were elegantly calm. He was Constable with no sense of the conservatism often attached to that word. He was without doubt so much more special than the crasser visual aspects of these links imply:

                        Nick Drake - River Man - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R6zCmCIsoAE

                        Nick Drake - Northern Sky - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S3jCFeCtSjk*

*It's John Cale on piano, celeste and Hammond organ on this one.

                        There will be more!

Thanks, Rob. I say "yes" - it was Charlie Gillett who initially got that song and the band to where they ultimately went - "stadium" - and I also have a liking of the film "Local Hero" and Mark's accompanying music. I have to watch myself as I will get a reputation for being indiscriminate. I'm not - I feel 90-95% of "stuff" can be left to those who like it without adverse comment - but I will take the best of any area as I see it. Recognise it is all taste and opinion. I am open to Hodgson and Co and would do an odd contrast with Supergrass as the vocals surprisingly are not dissimilar. Am currently trying to recall a 1950s pop thing that Charlie played in his last year, happily surprised he had taken to it - Muli Song??:

                            Gillett's Dire Straits - Wild West End - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5GAjbAIqhq8

                            (the latter from "Local Hero")

                            Best wishes to you!

                              Rod Stewart,
Songs don't do a lot for me.
Yet I've seen him live countless times,Mrs ER is his biggest fan,we are watching him on telly now.
So I accompany her whenever he is in town, well she does put up with occasional live RVW and DSCH for me.
But I do like this golden oldie

                                You are testing me.

                                Here's a thing:

Aged 8, I have two Rod albums on my Christmas list. My parents and Father Christmas aren't "buying" it. Not too keen on his appearance etc! Rod's a connection with the best mate and his much older brother because when the latter isn't listening to Humble Pie, he rates Stewart. I think on our level, it was the football playing on stage. We liked it. And then my 81 year old grandmother enters into the equation, walking into my bedroom in which there was Alan Freeman with me and says - much as Grandad in "Only Fools and Horses" might have done - "oh what a really lovely song, I do like that one very much Lit-Lateral". She was less than enamoured years later with Mike Berry's "Sunshine of Your Smile" (originally 1913). Anyhow, my parents shrugged their shoulders and continued to prepare the salads. But, yes, it was "Maggie May", John Peel was, erm, "involved" when it came to the television and there was not a sign of an ex "sexy in his own eyes" ransacking Porter, Berlin and ilk. There have been moments along the way, good and bad, and the mandolin makes it for me, along with the bar room blues. It really isn't a million miles to the heroic Hull/Jackson. And there's a new/old Faces thing in 2015 which I will try to find for you:

                                Rod Stewart - Maggie May - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fD_6KqP7K0g
