He'll live on in my memory for that astonishing Bruckner 8 with the BBC SO a few years ago. It was jaw-droppingly slow but it gripped me from beginning to end.

    RIP.

Very sad news. I was lucky enough to hear him conduct Sibelius 5, 6 & 7 in one evening with the BBC SSO. Absolutely unforgettable!

      RIP, Maestro.

I lost count at 151 ! He also wrote quartets and led his own quartet flor some years. He always struck me as an intensely energetic man , for whom there was never enough time for him to do what he wanted .

Nobody has yet commented on his music - only on his perfomances as a conductor.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

I might give Symphony No. 289 a listen, if only because it's subtitled 'When a cat visited'.

I'll have a look at YouTube. It has No 295.

Here's Tom Service's take on it:
Maverick, eccentric? Words can't describe this prolific Finnish composer – which probably explains his symphonies' titles

If you get your 5 a day that’s about 2 and a half months listening - no idea how long each symphony is!

Apparently quite a few are on the short side. The one with the cat lasts just over 19 minutes.
