    Don't assume too much - it's a computer!

I wish this were a real performance (I have tapes of two, but they're very old and poorly recorded).

My 1979 Clarinet Concerto will be published later this year. I've finished revising the score, and I'm just completing the piano reduction - so boring! Here's an adequate computer rendition. You'l need to play it through good speakers or headphones (the computer's internal speakers won't be enough). Also, it's at a fairly low level.

But it's quite a good rendition.

The concerto was one consequence of meeting a very gifted clarinetist in March 1979. It was written very quickly (at least for me) with the central Romanza completed within three weeks in April and May, and the Preludio during July. The final Scherzo was begun on 3 August and finished on 22 October, by which time we were engaged to be married. Quick work (this is the future first Mrs Pabs of course - who is still a good friend, as well as of the second Mrs Pabs - comparing notes, I guess!).

The concerto is heavily influenced by Gerald Finzi’s. The opening movement, Preludio – Andante con moto, is the longest and loosely follows sonata form, contrasting a wistful but determined melody with a more joyful and lighthearted one. The whole is highly chromatic and seems reluctant to remain in one key for long. At the end, the wistful melody is transformed to give a gentle and contented conclusion. The central Romanza – Adagietto is built around a subdued melody that eventually rises to a passionate climax, but not before the clarinet has shown its skill in performing arabesques. The last movement, Scherzo – Vivo, is based upon a six-note cipher of the dedicatee’s name – A-E-F-E-G-E. This is heard first in the strings before the clarinet enters with a rondo-like theme based on the same phrase. A second cipher, this time based on my name, makes a brief appearance. A more lyrical theme (itself a variant of an earlier one) is the second subject. The opening theme returns but the momentum slackens until a theme from the first movement ushers in a gentle version of the second subject. The music dies away until the opening clarinet theme from the Preludio begins the coda, which is based entirely on repetitions of the six-note cipher, providing both the melody and harmony for the build-up to the final flourish.

My memory of 1979 is of sunshine and the dedication - 'for Anne in sunshine' - reflects this. The first performances were given by Anne Ferrige on 5 November 1979 and 19 May 1980 at Winchester School of Art. She also gave it at the RCM, though with piano.

The score and piano reduction will probably not appear before September, but if there's anyone who'd like one (a freebie, unless I get dozens of requests) perhaps you'd PM me.

    Don't expect anything 'modern'.

It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

I have downloaded the tracks, and started to listen to one of them. I am suspicious of the site which provides the downloads, and as I was at listening (on headphones) I was nearly deafened by "something" which started up by itself, and seemed to be commenting on some malware. Probably was the malware itself, which hopefully I've now removed.

What I've heard so far of the first movement was certainly pleasant, and rather like Finzi as suggested. I was wondering how feasible it would be to get a group together to perform this. The orchestra doesn't sound huge, though it's probably bigger than anything I could contemplate assembling, and I don't know any clarinetists who might take this on either. Perhaps there are people "out there" who could put on a performance and record it.

Sorry about the strange noise. I've not had trouble with Mediafire in the past, but...

It's a string orchestra, of reasonable difficulty perfectly playable by amateurs (I know because we did it with a good amateur ensemble in 1992). As for clarinettists, well the only person who's ever done it is my 'ex', who was exceptional (she had so few places to breathe in the last movement!). If you are ever interested, I'll make sure you get score, parts and a piano reduction, but you'll have to PM me.

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
              Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

What drives me from Mediafire is the welter of advertising that comes with downloading from them. You can get two or three tabs full for each download. Even though files only remain available for a couple of week via the free version of WeTransfer.com, I find it far less intrusive, and files of up to 2GB can be sent. The trick is to send to your own email address, then quote the URL they advise you of to make the file available to others.

I'm posting new links, because the sound is so much better. For this I have to thank (from the bottom of my heart) MrGG, who has tweaked it all.

I use an Imac - would that make a difference?

I don't think so. I have had masses of advertising previously when downloading files from Mediafire which were uploaded from Apple computers.

Perhaps they just don't like the music.

I don't think it was anything to do with you. I suspect that somehow MacKeeper or something similar was activated off the Mediafire site, and from reviews I've seen that's something which is supposed to help with one's Mac, but may in fact cause more problems than it should. Anyway, the issue was that rather than just getting a message notification, I got an audible notification at about 130dB blasted down my honourable lug holes as I was trying to listen to the first movement.

That's why I suggested making sure it's all downloaded first. I would also suggest not using headphones, and don't have the browser window open while listening, at least the first time.

If anyone else has problems, I'd suggest running a virus check - even on a Mac - after downloading from that site.

Re the music - I used to know some clarinetists (am. spelling?), but getting a string orchestra of moderate size together might be a big challenge, though a string quartet possibly slightly augmented might work, but would take quite a while to organise. Couldn't be re-orchestrated sensibly for anything else, could it? I have a friend who might still be conducting a wind/brass band.

Maybe some others around here might try to find a way to get a performance.

Anyway, best wishes - and I'll listen to the rest of it in a while - probably downloading the new files - thanks to mrgg.
