That way, he'll be safe from the sort of questioning that lured the other Petrenko into saying some rather unfortunate things when he took on a new job.

But surely part of that job is to promote the orchestra, not act as a recluse? He doesn't have to do all those things, just be available for interviews etc (did SSR pose in a wet teeshirt, ever? Please don't post any pictures if he did)

Oh, I don't know; I'm trying to imagine Leif Segerstam - er, actually, on second thoughts, no, I'm not...

The best of Kirill Petrenko I know of is this:

Suk Asrael Symphony OKOB/Petrenko. Live 2002 (and how!!) CPO 777-012-2

Buy Asrael Symphony (Petrenko, Berlin Comic Opera Orchestra) by Josef Suk, Kirill Petrenko, Orchester Komischer Oper Berlin from Amazon's Classical Music Store. Everyday low prices and free delivery on eligible orders.

The work is very close to my heart, and this is as good a performance as any...
In other words, almost too truthful to bear...

(Sound - 10/10 - menacingly powerful! Rich, dark textures. Oh god, I really shouldn't have left it playing... the middle section of the vivace... just appalling, terrifying.)

Strangely, this recording seems to have been deleted by CPO. It was, I think, the first in their series devoted to Suk's orchestral works, but only the second and third issues are now listed on the CPO web site. I wonder if today's announcement will result in its magical reappearance?

Vasily Petrenko probably wouldn't look too bad in one. I've no idea what Kirill P. looks like.

Seems he's a very shy man who doesn't like talking to the press. It seems amazing that, in today's media hungry environment, he refuses to engage. To be head of an orchestra that travels the world on a regular basis and who generates tremendous interest will require him to be a figure head.

He'd better be a damn good conductor to justify ducking out of what is an essential part of the job.
I wonder if he will be up for your George Lloyd project pastoralguy ?

I've tried uploading a photo, but the forum tells me the format is invalid. So here's a link.

He's a shy guy. He says as much in the course of an interview on the Digital Concert Hall. He was referring to his first appearance with the BPO in 2006, and said he wasn't sure how much he should say to the players, that his shyness prevented him from being himself in front of them, and that he felt the rehearsal hadn't gone well. In the interview, though, he comes across as a passionately musical person and had some fascinating things to say about his reluctance to perform Russian repertoire (for fear of becoming type-cast) and about his high regard for Elgar's 2nd Symphony.

He doesn't look that much different from the other one.
