I've only caught isolated glimpses: some fine voices (there was a bass yesterday who made a splendid sound) but not a great deal of dramatic involvement in what I've seen so far. Unfortunately, I also caught some of the cringingly awful backstage encounters ("That was wonderful! How do you think it went, then?") which should be done away with completely.

I'm sort of following it, the opera on television and the Song Prize on and off on the radio. Was shocked by how bad the Britten aria was tonight, yet followed by pretty good Verdi.

I'm more interested in Lieder than I am in opera, on the whole. I prefer intimacy and subtlety to vocal gymnastics.

Who is this person "Angel Blue" who seems to be on every time I tune (briefly) into Radio 3 at my least favourite times or BBC Four?

It seems she's a singer - is anyone aware of a performance by her? From her name she sounds as if she's parachuted in from one of Gerry & Sylvia Anderson's 'Supermarionation' adventure series...

I'm whizzing through the recorded TV progs, avoiding chat and dipping into performances to hear if there's a voice that does it for me....
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
            Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

According to Wiki she is 'an American operatic soprano and crossover artist'. Unlike some, she has actually appeared in opera. Angel Blue is, astonishingly, her real name.

I think she's supposed to appeal to the masses who are no doubt tuning in to BBC4 every evening to watch operatic arias.

I'm afraid this whole project is turning into 'Cardiff's Got [Classical] Talent' or similar. Presentation is cringeworthy, and some of the singing is at best so-so.
Talk about grinding to ersatz glitzy dust a once fine jewel in the R3 crown.

I agree. Also, I can't understand the rationale of the judging system whereby one singer per night (+ one "wild card") gets into the final. To make this a fair method, they would surely have to do some seeding in advance, as in a sporting event, which would seem to be a rather dubious piece of pre-judging. If not, you could easily get a distorted selection of finalists.

O God it's awful isn't it. Tried to watch slightly more of the programme this evening, didn't make it past 5 minutes' worth.

Also, when is the 'Classical Voice' "season" on Radio 3 going to be over? I haven't seen it being branded as a week, or a fortnight, or whatever. Is it indefinite?

i really dont know what is worse, the presenters, or the tennis player style responses from the singers.
In fact, all interviews with professional performers of all kinds should be very carefully quality controlled before anything is allowed on air.

Does anybody really care about their hobbies, or how often they work out ?

Oh and the first bit of singing I heard was pretty dreadful.:

Me too. The whole structure of the programme is like a cheap TV talent show.

It wasn't always like this, the competition has been ruined IMO.
