I was relieved by the demise of the dumbed down version, where the BBC’s “arranger” did most of the thinking, but it’s a pity they didn’t have the guts to admit they’d made a mistake and reverted to something more like the original format.

In my experience large organisations never admit they're wrong. I'm in a dispute with my energy supplier (luckily, no money is involved: it's a point of principle) where it's as plain as a pikestaff that they've behaved dishonestly, but they keep ignoring my point or wheedling round it! I've no doubt there were red faces at Radio 3 over the absurdity of the rules of last year's competition, but I suppose no-one's allowed to say anything. It's not just the Pope who has to be infallible.

I take the fact that it wasn't run again this year as an admission that perhaps they might have got something wrong. However, although I'm grateful for the reprieve (even though with my greatly reduced listening I wouldn't have been subject to so many ads for it) I am slightly puzzled as the new version would seem to be very much in line with the 'increasing accessibility/ widening listener appeal' agenda being foisted on R3. Perhaps it's in cold storage rather than buried...

It’s more likely to be an “efficiency saving..”

Has it perhaps been replaced by the Advent Calendar slot in Breakfast?
I've only caught two: one while driving and the other (written by a friend) on Sounds.
There was no introduction or explanation of who the composers were or why the pieces had been chosen.
My friend had originally been told that his piece would be broadcast (I think as part of a concert) on 22 December, and only found out that it wasn't after the broadcast had been made.
Perhaps they'll be next year's BBC MM Christmas CD: it would be a shame if they only got one broadcast each.
