RIP Walter Weller...

The RSNO has just announced that Walter Weller has died.

An under-rated conductor who started his career as the leader of the Vienna Philharmonic when he was 23! Perhaps at at his best in the Viennese classics, he was a true musician.

Thanks for the memories and the music, Maestro.

Very, very sad news indeed.
Apart from Previn's no.2 I started to appreciat Rachmaninov's symphonies through Weller's/LPO 1970s Decca 3LP-set.
Many recordings of his followed.

Yes, another sad announcement. Not to be forgotten is his work with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic where he certainly livened things up a bit!

One story was of a Viennese concert where, at the rehearsal, a percussionist asked about adding a few jokes. The answer came in a very stern voice - "yokes? yokes? - if zer ees yokes I make ze yokes!"

And one that I witnessed from the 8th horn chair in 'Ein Heldenleben'. The leader was struggling with a passage in the violin solo. Herr Weller, in an uncharacteristically avuncular manner, said "do not vorry; I know zis ees difficult, I play it myself many times!" Which reminds us that he was a fine violinist and onetime leader of the Vienna Philharmonic.

Such wonderful characters as this make life a joy.

Very sad news - I've long been a fan, from his days as leader of the VPO and the Weller Quartet a mc his very very good recordings on Decca and Chandos. I saw him conduct the CBSO back in the eighties in the Town Hall - the venue though not ideal for the purpose - Symphony Hall was long overdue - but it always gave the feeling of having an orchestra in your living room. RIP WW.

I enjoy his set of Prokofiev symphonies, though I haven't heard much else by him.

I'm today dipping into this set - really is quite marvellous - excellent recording too; as I write, I'm listening to symphony no. 1. A rather smashing 7th as well, must give that spin later....

This is on the Musical Heritage Society label (USA) produced by Chandos, it says. (No reason to disbelieve this - doesn't sound like a boot-leg) There seems to be some very cheap availability on 'you know who!'
